Reviewing Graze: A Snack Variety Pack

Have you guys heard of Graze?

Graze Box review

One of my girlfriends has been getting Graze boxes for a while now and loves them. She recently got a special deal to give a friend a free box (and earn one as well), so she suggested that I try them out with no commitment.

I figured I might as well give them a try since it was free. And I like snacks, so it was kind of a win-win situation.

I started by picking the nibble box (they also have a calorie counter box and a big box) which includes four portion controlled snacks per delivery. I then filled out the surveys so that they could learn what foods I like and dislike. I tend to be kind of a ‘normal’ eater, so I made sure to put “trash” for foods that looked WAY too healthy…like an oatmeal and raisin spelt cookie with berry compote and a rustic rolled oat flapjack with mixed seeds and dried fruits. Blegh.

I’m sure there are lots of people that like that kind of stuff, but I’m not one of them!

For the snacks that I thought I would enjoy, I picked either “try” or “love” so that they would know what kinds of flavors I like.

Here’s what I got in my first box:

Graze Box 1

Wholegrain Banana Caramel Dippers
Triple Berry Smoothie
Texan Corn Salsa
Mississippi BBQ Pistachios

Each snack was individually packaged, so you could throw one in as you are packing your lunch bag for the day. Or you could just sit the entire box next to your laptop and try them all at the same time for “review” purposes. Out of this box I would have to say that the Texan Corn Salsa and the Mississippi BBQ Pistachios were my favorites. They both had really good flavors and the sizes of the portions were just right for snacking. I didn’t really enjoy either of the other two snacks at all. I didn’t like the flavor or the consistency of the Banana Caramel Dippers, which is funny because I thought I would love them. As for the triple berry smoothie, I just wasn’t very impressed at all.

I decided to give the Graze box another chance though, so I adjusted my snack favorites settings and allowed another box to come.

Graze Box 2

Tropical Daiquiri
Brownie Flapjack
Chocolate Pecan Pie
Salsa Corn Chips

Once again, my box came with nicely sized snacks. Out of this box, my favorite was the Tropical Daiquiri dried fruits and that one disappeared pretty quickly. The brownie flapjacks were my second favorite – they tasted a bit on the “too healthy” side for me, but the chunks of chocolate brownie were really nice. As much as I usually love salsa and chips, I did not like the ones in the box. The chips were just too peppery and the salsa tasted too sweet. As for the Chocolate Pecan Pie mix, I liked the little ‘chocolate’ bites but pecans are not one of my favorites and there were a ton of them. If you are a pecan person, you would have loved it!

Is it worth it?
I think the concept of the Graze box is really great, especially if you have the box delivered to your workplace once a week. Imagine not having to stare at the vending machine and then finally pay $3 for a bag of chips you didn’t really want in the first place?! If I were in an office five days a week again, I would totally do this. I think the value of the box — $6.49 for four different snacks – is pretty good. It’s nice to try out different types of snacks to broaden your horizon of what you like to eat.

For me, I don’t know if this is the best fit because I didn’t end up loving a lot of the snacks that I tried. For someone trying to eat healthy, I think the Calorie Counter box sounds like an AWESOME idea. Also, if you tend to like lots of grains and seeds and dried fruit, you’ll probably love everything you receive.

Want to try it for yourself?
Remember how I said that my friend was able to hook me up with a free box? Well, I can give YOU all a free box too! In the notes section for this month’s Fix, here is what I put: “Stylist: Sara J again. This month’s Fix will come right before my anniversary weekend at a B&B with my husband. I’d love something sassy to wear to go to dinner and walk around Baltimore. Fall transition options would be great and please no more sleeveless tops for now. Check out my pinterest page!”

So, did I end up with anything to wear for our upcoming weekend?

October Stitch Fix Review - Pocketful of Joules

Check out the FASHION SHOW and YOU be the judge!

Olive and Oak Mulliken Raglan Striped Knit Shirt - Stitch Fix

Item #1: Olive & Oak Mulliken Raglan Striped Knit Shirt – $48
I have been dying for an awesome mixed-stripe shirt! Remember how sad I was when I had to send the sweater from last month’s Fix back?!  I’ve had a couple striped tops on my Pinterest board FOREVER and recently pinned this exact shirt, so I was super excited to get it in my Fix.

This shirt is SO incredibly soft – putting it on is like slipping into a well-worn pajama top. The colors are so pretty and there is even a band of burgundy around the neckline. I styled it for two kinds of date’s with my hubby. The first would be a normal dinner out with Jack – my distressed jeans (Stitch Fix) and my green chucks make this outfit cute, but also appropriate for toddler wrangling. The second look is something that I could wear this weekend – pretty sparkly necklace (J.Crew) my grey skinny jeans (Kate Spade) and a pair of leopard print heels (Target).

My only issue with striped tops (and this could totally be a me being crazy thing) is that when you have a larger chest it kind of drives me crazy keeping the stripes straight across so that they don’t get all wonky and look weird. Also, um… do the stripes make me look kinda chubby? I haven’t been doing so well with my diet and I’m up a couple pounds… which all seem to have found my tummy.

Keep or Return? I’m leaning towards buying it. What do you think?

Gilli Kary Drape Front Knit Dress - Stitch Fix

Item #2: Gilli Kary Drape Front Knit Dress – $64
I HAVE been on quite a dress kick lately and love one that is comfortable, but work appropriate. When I first saw this one, I thought the cobalt blue color was beautiful and would transition well to winter with some black tights and a sweater.

My stylist recommended I wear it with my quilted faux leather jacket from my last Fix and I really like that she thought about what was already in my closet when sending it. For each picture I’m wearing a statement necklace (J.Crew) and sassy leopard heels (Target). Unfortunately I’m not a fan of knit dresses, because they cling in all the wrong places. You can’t tell in the pictures, but I’m totally sucking my stomach in so hard that I was in danger of passing out. Also, if I turn to the side, the high waist makes me look like I could be wearing a maternity dress.

I styled this one for a date night, with and without the jacket. I have to admit, it does look pretty cute in the pictures and I could probably make it work with some hardcore spanx underneath.

Keep or Return? As much as I love the color, I’m going to have to pass on this one. While it’s okay to break out the confining undergarments on an as-needed basis, the last thing I want on our anniversary weekend is to feel totally uncomfortable the entire time.

Mystree Maiya Canvas Jacket - Stitch Fix

Item #3: Mystree Maiya Canvas Jacket – $88
Now this jacket is something I would never even pick up in a store to try on, but the mix of materials is really cool and interesting. My stylist recommended that I try the jacket with the two tops she sent, so that is exactly what I did. For the first two looks, I’m wearing my distressed jeans (Stitch Fix) and a pair of grey boots (9 West). For the third look, I’m wearing a pair of Kut from the Kloth bootcut jeans that I recently picked up at Nordstrom Rack. I never even heard of that brand before I started getting Fixes and now I’m in love with their jeans!

This jacket feels like a super comfortable sweater when it’s on and I was super tempted to add it to my coat collection. However, it is too similar to the Mystree Skylar Asymmetrical Jacket I received in July. Even though fall is my absolute favorite and I’m a sucker for a cute jacket, winter is coming soon and I don’t really need another lightweight option.

Keep or return? I really like this jacket, but it’s too similar to one I already own.

41Hawthorn Mission Abstract Dot Print blouse - Stitch Fix

Item #4: 41Hawthorn Mission Abstract Dot Print Blouse – $68
Speaking of loving fall, this shirt is like fall exploded all over it… in a good way! I love the rust and orange colors – it reminds me of a tree changing color. The fit is okay, maybe a little tight in the bust if I move around in weird positions. The neckline is pretty though, kind of like a curved v-neck. For the first styling, I’m wearing a date night outfit of skinny jeans (Kut from the Kloth) and wedges (Toms). For the second look, I’m all set for the office in a navy pencil skirt (Banana Republic), canvas blazer (Anthropologie) and heels (DSW). My only question is… is it TOO fall? I’m on the fence with this one.

Keep or return? I really like the colors of this top, but I’m not 100% loving the fit on me. I’m looking to you guys to tell me what you think!

Sweet Rain Toma Floral Print Blouse - Stitch Fix

Item #5: Toma Floral Print Short-Sleeve Blouse – $44
Oh my gosh, I’m in LOVE with this shirt. It is that magical mixture of floral and fall/winter appropriate. Its short sleeved, but would look fantastic under a cardigan or blazer too. The fit is great and there is no pulling at all on the chest area or arms. There is even a cute little tab-sleeve detail that I love (you can see it on the close up picture at the top of this post).

I love this shirt so much that I styled it three different ways. First, if the weather is nice I would absolutely wear this walking around Baltimore for our anniversary weekend – bootcut jeans (Kut from the Kloth) and that pair of leopard heels (Target) that keeps showing up. I’ll probably bring flatter shoes if we will be doing a lot of walking through. For the other two looks, I could wear either of these to the office. The middle look has a long necklace (Wantable) and a cranberry colored pencil skirt (Banana Republic). The last look has my swing skirt from a previous Fix (Stitch Fix), the same necklace and a colorful belt (Banana Republic).

Keep or return? I’m pretty much making googly eyes at this shirt, so I’m going to have to buy it!

Help me!
Now it’s time for you to chime in and tell me what I should buy! I’m leaning towards buying the striped shirt and the floral shirt. I’m undecided about the fall blouse and I’m passing on the jacket and the dress. I’d love to hear your feedback, so please leave me some comments below and tell me what you think!

Also, I’d like to give a big THANK YOU to the person who used my referral code a couple days ago. Because you were so nice as to use my code when signing up for your own Stitch Fix, I received $25 in my account. So anything I purchase will be $25 less. Thank you!

10/16/14 Update: Thank you ALL for your feedback! I appreciate each and every comment that you guys take the time to leave! After much deliberation I decided to JUST buy what I love… so I bought the floral top. The fit was perfect, I can imagine it with lots of different outfits and {best of all} I’m already planning when I can wear it! Stay tuned for my next Fix… I have it scheduled to arrive Thanksgiving week!

That Time I Sort of Tried a Juice Cleanse

Have you guys been hearing about juice cleanses? Supposedly they reprogram your body so that you don’t crave bad things, you lose weight, your skin looks luminous and movie stars are suddenly knocking at your door for dates.

At least, that’s what I hear.

When I started looking into different pre-packaged cleanses out there I was SHOCKED at the prices. I mean, there is NO way I’m paying $200 to NOT eat for three days. Just saying.

Also, I know you can buy a juicer and a ton of veggies and make your own juices, but the start-up costs for that option are pretty high as well. Especially if you’re not sure if you’re going to like it.

I really wanted to try a juice cleanse though. My veggie intake has been kind of low lately and I really wanted some kind of 3-day quickie program to kick my butt back into eating healthier again. Also, I was curious whether I’d be able to stick with a juice program for three whole days.

I ended up picking up the Suja Essentials 3 day Fresh Start cleanse because it’s a Costco Exclusive that runs about $30. That’s more in my price range! Suja includes a meal plan with recipes and quicker grab-and-go meals to go with the program. Here’s their promise: At the end of the Suja Essentials 3 Day Fresh Start you will feel recharged, restored and renewed in your healthy habits. SOLD.

Suja Essentials 3 day Fresh Start juice cleanse review - Pocketful of Joules

So, how did it go?
First, let’s talk about the three juices and how I thought they tasted:

Spicy Lemon: water, maple syrup, lemon and cayenne.
The Spicy Lemon is the first juice you drink as your ‘breakfast’ juice, which will be followed by your light meal about 30 minutes later. For some reason I expected the Spicy Lemon to taste like lemonade. I have no idea why, because lemonade is pretty much all sugar and this has NO sugar in it. It actually doesn’t taste like lemonade at all, more like a glass of water with some fresh squeezed lemons and a kick of cayenne pepper at the end. It sounds weird to mix lemon with cayenne, but I really liked this one and it totally grew on me over the three days. If I saw this in the store, I’d probably grab it up to drink again.

Green Greatness: apple, celery, cucumber, kale, collard greens, lemon juice, peppermint tea, spearmint tea, spinach, ginger, spirulina, chlorella, barley grass & alfalfa grass.
The Green Greatness is the ‘lunch’ juice, which will be followed by the light lunch meal about 30 minutes later. I was most scared of this juice because it’s GREEN… but I was cautiously optimistic because I like vegetables.

Upon opening my first bottle, I leaned in to smell the juice and it smelled like grass. ACTUAL grass that someone has cut in your yard. I took a sip and immediately thought, “oh it’s not too bad… kinda lemony?” Then the aftertaste set in. OH HOLY HELL, what IS this?! It tastes like… um, is YUCK a taste? It tastes like YUCK! The first day I choked it down straight and couldn’t even FATHEM doing that the second day. The only way I got through the next two servings of Green Greatness is by gulping it down quickly and as soon as I stopped drinking I’d bite into a cheese stick. Would I buy this again? HELL to the NO.

Vanilla Nutz: water, banana, coconut, almonds, honey, cinnamon, vanilla and allspice.
The Vanilla Nutz is the last of the juices and you drink it about 30 minutes before you have your dinner. After the disgusting mess that was Green Greatness, I was expecting this to taste like a freaking milkshake. I mean, it’s white and creamy like a watery milkshake… but it doesn’t taste like one. It was pretty good though and to my taste buds it’s like a nutty banana milk. Maybe a little gritty afterwards because of the crushed almonds. I enjoyed the taste and thought it was nice and filling. I really liked having it at the end of each workday when I was starting to get hungry. With lunch around noon and dinner around 7:00, there’s quite a long time between meals, so having this around 5:00 worked out great. I would absolutely drink this again and may grab a few to keep on hand for that end-of-day slump.

Did I stick with the plan?
Kind of.

If you’re interested in checking out the provided meal plan, you can see it here. I followed it kind of loosely…

Day 1
What I drank/ate: Spicy Lemon juice, instant oatmeal, Green Greatness juice, banana and 1 ½ tablespoons of peanut butter, Vanilla Nutz juice, random Let’s Dish samples, chicken breast, green beans, water.

I wasn’t hungry at all the first day because the juices and the mini meals were spread out throughout the day. I ended up having the Vanilla Nutz drink around 4:30pm and then had to run up the road to do a session at Let’s Dish with a girlfriend. I ate some random samples there and then came home to have my dinner around 7:30pm. So, I didn’t stick with the exact schedule and diet, but I was pretty close.

How I felt: I felt okay through the day, besides having to pee about a dozen times. Other than that, there was no crazy bathroom stuff happening (Katie says people are wondering whether my stomach exploded and I can tell you that it did not). After my healthy dinner of chicken, green beans and water, I had a TERRIBLE headache. I don’t know if I can attribute it to the juicing though, because I ate a relatively normal dinner. I’m guessing it had to do with my lack of caffeine all day long, since I skipped my morning coffee, any sodas, and any chocolate.

Day 2
What I drank/ate: Homemade coffee with milk and sugar, Spicy Lemon juice, greek yogurt, Green Greatness juice, cheese stick, salad with lots of healthy stuff, 3 mini dark chocolate Hershey bars, Vanilla Nutz juice, chicken breast, green beans, water, a handful of candy corn.

I decided not to skip my coffee for the second day because I had to wake up at 5:45am for work AND didn’t want to have to fight a headache or tiredness. It was a bit harder sticking with the diet because I was at our office that has lots of temptations (mainly chocolate). I also treated myself with candy corn at the end of the day, which I’m guessing is not part of a normal person’s cleanse.

How I felt: No headaches today, so that was a total improvement. I did feel a bit bloated in the afternoon and evening though. Bathroom stuff was still totally fine and normal, nothing to see here.

Day 3
What I drank/ate: Homemade coffee with milk and sugar, Spicy Lemon juice, Green Greatness juice, cheese stick, salad with lots of healthy stuff, greek yogurt, Vanilla Nutz juice, salmon, mushrooms, homemade mac & cheese, water, handful of candy corn.

I accidentally skipped my yogurt breakfast on the third day because I was super busy and by time I noticed I forgot to have it, it was time for lunch. Of course, my lunch salad totally sucked… so I had my yogurt in the afternoon to hold me over until Vanilla Nutz time. While I was a bit sad that it was the last day of my cleanse, I was NOT sad that it was the last time I’d EVER have to drink a Green Greatness juice. You would think I’d get used to the flavor, but every gulp was a testament to the willpower to GET ‘ER DONE.

How I felt: No headaches today either, so I’m guessing it was just a caffeine withdrawal thing. Besides having to go back and forth to the bathroom to pee all the livelong day (does that count as cardio?), I felt totally normal. No bloating, even though I was wearing a slim-ish pencil skirt.

So, what did I think?
Returning back to the Suja promise, do I feel “recharged, restored and renewed” in my healthy habits? Um… kinda. I mean, I was eating like total crap before the cleanse and then ate REALLY well during the cleanse (just ignore the candy corn consumption…), it was like my system went from one extreme to another. I’m hoping that now I can recalibrate back to ‘normal’ and eat mostly healthy with a little crap thrown in there for funsies.

To be honest, I NEVER want to be the kind of person who ONLY eats healthy stuff, or who has to choke down her vegetables (juiced or otherwise). Eating is a fun and pleasurable thing for me, which I feel is the way it should be.

As I’m sure you’re curious – because I totally am when I read other peoples cleanse reviews – I did lose 2 pounds. However, I typically fluctuate a couple pounds throughout the week and I’m pretty sure that ANYONE would lose a little bit of weight when you do a low calorie diet for a few days.

I actually rather enjoyed this cleanse. Two of the three drinks were pretty darn tasty and it certainly tested my willpower to see if I could stick with it for three days. Three days was also a nice, short doable period of time to stick with light meals and salads. You know, as long as there is candy corn. I honestly don’t know if I could have done a full juice cleanse for three days (with no solid food) and I guess I never will because I’m too cheap to spend the money to do it!

I really liked having a low calorie, yet nutritious drink to have at the end of the day to keep me from overeating at dinnertime. The Vanilla Nutz was really good, but I’d like to try a few other flavors to switch it up a bit. Apparently Suja just came out with a seasonal flavor called “Call me Pumpkin” that sounds super yummy. I’d also like to try a few different veggie-based juices to see if I can find something similar to Green Greatness that tastes better.

Have you ever done a juice cleanse? If so, what did you think? Did I answer all of your juicing questions? If not, what do you want to know?

(This post is not sponsored. I paid for the Suja juices with my own money and all thoughts and opinions are my own).
