Hopping on the Peloton Trend… Kinda.

Source: Amazon.com

It’s happened. I’ve finally reached the part of the pandemic where I feel like I need a Peloton bike.

Didn’t you know… first comes the organizing, then the baking of banana bread, the Netflix streaming of Schitt’s Creek, and now I’ve reached the Peloton phase. It’s a thing. We all go through it.

The Peloton phase crept up on me a slowly. First, my BFF had one for like a year. And I was intrigued… but not $2,000 intrigued. Then, my sister got one and loves it… and her husband loves it now too. And finally, a friend was talking about how she loves her Peloton so much she lost 10 pounds.

Um… 10 pounds? Okay, I’m listening…

I’ve been trying to keep active and over the summer did plenty of outdoor walks. Lately, I’ve been using my elliptical and will occasionally throw in an exercise DVD to pep things up a bit.

I like the idea of adding an additional piece of exercise equipment to the mix. I also like the idea of having peppy instructors keep me motivated with changing workouts and dance music.

What I don’t like is spending $2,000 + $40 a month for an all-active membership subscription. Also, the bikes are taking awhile to ship out. Their website warns you that it may take 10 weeks, but many people online are complaining that it has been even longer.

Basically, I want a cheaper Peloton with a cheaper subscription and quicker shipping.

I did some googling and reading and more googling and reading… and I decided to purchase myself a set up that is similar to the expensive and fancy Peloton bike.

Here’s what I ordered:

My total was: $364.60 + tax

(Note, my original bike purchase price was $339.98 and I noticed it dropped $55 when preparing this post, so I used the Chat to contact Amazon and they have given me a credit for the difference).

Rather than purchasing the All-Access Peloton subscription for $39.99/month, I will be purchasing the individual Peloton Digital Membership app for $12.99/month. As of this weekend, Peloton is offering your first 30 days FREE!

My bike arrived over the weekend and I shared my ‘setting it up’ experience on my Instagram stories (you can find them saved on my Instagram page under Peloton Fun). If you are on Peloton, you can connect with me on the app — just search for JoulesGetsFit.

I’ll certainly keep you all updated, so let me know what questions you have and I’ll be sure to answer them in my next post!

  1. I got 3 months free of the app at the start of the pandemic, and it was the best thing. I’m now a happily paying subscriber.

    1. That’s awesome! When I started looking a month ago, they didn’t have any free deals running… so I was happy to jump on the 30 days free when I saw it launched again! =)

  2. This is such a great post. I’ve been secretly side-eyeing my neighbors because they got a Peloton, but I just cannot bring myself to spend that much money, especially because I think we’re at the point where some of the alternatives are just as good.

Then I went down a deep, dark rabbit hole trying to do all the research on Peloton alternatives myself. Sigh.

What made you decide on this particular bike? Was it just price or did it have a lot of the same features as the Peloton? I’m so intrigued! And I just started following you on IG, and congrats on your first workout. Now I really, really want one!

    1. Thank you so much! I decided on this particular bike because I liked the price, it has very good reviews for long-term use, it is whisper quiet (so I won’t bother my kiddo if I’m up early on it), and it has a plastic shelf where you can sit your iphone or tablet to view classes. The one thing it didn’t have is the cadence monitor, which I purchased separately. I haven’t yet received it, but it also had very good reviews.

I love the idea of Peloton and Peloton classes, but I hadn’t taken a spin class in years so 2k was just too much to waste if I hated it! So far I’ve done 2 spin classes and 1 stretching class and the app seems pretty easy to use and I’ve enjoyed each class I’ve tried. I’ll do a full review after I’ve used everything for awhile!

  3. I’m glad to hear that it really is quiet. That’s a hard thing to determine from an Amazon review, even though they have a marketing picture of a woman on the bike next to a sleeping baby in a crib!

Quick question – is the bike upstairs or downstairs? If it’s upstairs, can you hear a lot of noise downstairs? We don’t have any more sleeping babies in the house, but I don’t want to create too much noise in general.

    1. I have the bike upstairs, which puts it over our living room. I asked my son and he said he can’t hear me on it at all when he’s downstairs. In person, it’s practically silent… except my gasping for air… lol
