My March Stitch Fix: Vacation Style

Oh boy, oh boy… a lot is riding on this Stitch Fix box. If you can believe it, this is Fix #30 and it may be my last…

After such an amazing experience with Trunk Club a few weeks ago (full post is here), I was starting to feel like maybe they would be the better fit for me. But, breaking up is really hard to do… so I decided to give Stitch Fix one more chance.

Since we have a vacation quickly approaching, I decided to focus on just vacation clothes. Here’s what I told my stylist:

Stylist Sara J again. We are going on a cruise in a couple weeks, so let’s do a vacation fix! Easy tops, shorts and maybe a dress for dinner. Would love to try a pair of kelly green or cobalt blue skinny jeans. To be honest, unless it really blows me away I think this will be my last Fix for a while.

And here is the note I got in my box:

Note from SF

So there you go, a new stylist for my ‘last chance box’ because my stylist of 20ish boxes is gone. Hmmm.

Well, let’s see what she sent…

Item #1: DIBA Layna Metal Embellished Sandals, $40

Well, lookie here… shoes! I had heard that Stitch Fix was about to launch shoes as part of their service, but I didn’t expect to get a pair already. The price is nice at just $40 and the style is nice. However, if you showed me the shoes and asked me to guess how much they are worth, I’d guess much, much lower.

On a quality scale, I’d put them similar to Target’s shoes or a little worse. I like the ‘toughness’ of the metal and double ankle straps, but when I opened the bag I saw that there is already a rip in the back of one in the faux leather.

Keep or Return? I’d much rather buy an expensive pair of shoes on sale for $40 than spend the same amount of money on a pair that look like they are worth $20. They are going back.

Item #2: Brixon Ivy Brae Scuba Dress, $68

Holy cheese and crackers this dress is ugly! Wait, that’s kind of mean… let me think of something nice to say. Um, I like the fit-and-flare shape.

But WOW is that pattern ugly. I also really dislike the transparent netting at the top where you can see through to bra straps. And it’s called ‘scuba’ fabric, but it’s really just a thick polyester that makes me concerned about standing too near a candle flame. Sorry new stylist, this is strike #2… the dress is just horrible.

Keep or Return? It’s like an ice skating costume, or something you’d find in the teen section from 1978. I can’t shove this into the box fast enough. My eyes hurt… MY EYES!

Item #3: Pixley Jimson Zipper Detail Top, $54

I know some people like the whole ‘zippers as a design element’ thing, but I’m just not a fan. Whenever I see something like this I just think it would be awfully good for breastfeeding. Or getting out of a speeding ticket…just unzip the front as low as you dare!

Keep or Return? “I’m sorry officer, was I driving too fast…?” Nope, not gonna happen.

Item #4: Level 99 Cindie Linen Printed Short, $78

I’m not really a shorts person, so I was curious what they would send for me to try for my vacation. If I had seen these in a store, I would never have tried them on because I tend to lean towards classic jean shorts and this pattern is A LOT of pattern.

On the positive side, the shorts are made out of Tencel so they are very soft and stretchy. They just don’t really look that good on me and I feel like I’m wearing pajama shorts.

Keep or Return? To pay $78 for a pair of shorts I’d have to REALLY love them. And I don’t.

Item #5: Papermoon Dafilia V-Neck Drape Back Knit Top, $44

Thank goodness for this top, because this entire Fix was almost a bust and I really hate to lose my $20 styling fee. From the front this is a nice, classic tank top… but the little twist in the back gives it a little something extra. It is also made out of 95% rayon and 5% spandex, so it’s a bit dressier than a typical cotton tank top.

It is a bit too fitted on my tummy, but I got around that by tucking it into a high-waisted skirt (I got this one from Talbot’s last year).

Keep or Return? I like this top enough to keep it (and not lose my $20), but honestly if the styling fee weren’t in play I don’t know if I’d keep this one. The color is pretty and the back is interesting though, so hopefully I’ll get some wear out of it.

Well, it looks like an easy decision on what I’m going to buy for my 30th Fix, but now I have a bigger decision to make…

Is this the end of my love affair with Stitch Fix?

Should I take this Fix (and my new stylist) as a sign and quit Stitch Fix for good? Or maybe I should just ‘take a break’ and see other people for a few months. Maybe you think I’m overreacting and need to give them another shot. So, take it on down to the comments and tell me what you think!

  1. I am having the same problem with Stitchfix. My last few fixes have been totally off the mark (and I even sent an entire box back without buying anything). I am expecting a new box in a couple of weeks and am giving them the same ultimatum that you did. I think I can find some more satisfying things at TJMaxx, etc. It was fun to try (14 or so fixes), but it might be time to move on.

  2. I really love your stitch fix reviews, and always thought about trying it, but when you wrote about Trendsend, I thought I had struck gold. It seemed so much more custom. Unfortunately, finding anything in my size through them was very limited. However, I have already reached out to Trunk Club, and am working with Alicia, and I am SO excited for this experience! It just seems so great knowing whats coming, being able to give feedback before you even get the box, and having a phone call with your designer opposed to writing a little message on your account.

Loving your thoughts through the whole process!!! Wouldn’t blame you if you switched fully to Trunk Club!

    1. Thank you so much! I’m so glad you are having a great experience with Alicia (isn’t she great?!) and please let me know how it turns out for you! =)

  3. I feel the same way about Stitch Fix. I love some of the items that people have been receiving in their boxes but when it comes to mine, the pieces are just ehh to me.

On my last fix, i did exactly what you did and mentioned that I wanted an entire vacation fix because I’m going on a cruise. I was so excited to recieve the all vacation fix but was left underwhelmed. I received two tops that I kept but the rest of the fix was not me or “vacation” at all.

  4. Don’t be mad. The scuba dress photographed really well on you! I thought it looked pretty and balanced your shape out. I thought the net at the top added that dressy element for a cruise. But when you don’t feel it it’s a waste . But if you want to get out of your box……

  5. I’m selfish, because your Stitch Fix posts are my absolute favorite posts, but I have to agree that with a $20 styling fee, it might be time for a break at the very least, especially when the last few boxes have been so “meh” for you. Funnily enough, before I started reading this post, I was going to suggest you try a different stylist. Clearly, that idea would have been a bust!

  6. I like some of the pieces but agree that they aren’t really “getting you” like they could. It seems like Trunk Club is a better fit. I would have kept the blue top, too.

  7. I say, give Stitch Fix the “Ross & Rachel” treatment…break time! In fairness, I think the deck was stacked against them with the untimely departure of your longtime stylist. Give it some time and perhaps the heart shall grow fond once again!

  8. I have a love-hate relationship with Stitch Fix too, and I appreciate you always keeping it real! THat dress…. looks like a jack o lantern??!! The fit and flare look is very flattering on you, but in a solid color ir different pattern I would love it, dress fits amazing! but the pattern, its not even near Halloween!
