My Dyson Vacuum and Costco’s Return Policy

Source: Dyson.com

Way back in 2017, I decided that I was sick and tired of buying vacuums that would smell like death within a few months of normal use. I did a bunch of research and decided to purchase a fancy vacuum… specifically the Dyson V7 Animal Cordless Stick Vacuum.

It checked ALL my boxes: it was cordless, you charge it by attaching it to a wall mount, and the battery lasted long enough that I could vacuum one level of my house at a time before needing another charge. It was also bagless, so I could just dump the yuck directly into the trash.

When I was researching the vacuum, as always there were a few different places I could buy it with varying prices. Back in 2017, the Dyson V7 was brand new and the price was right around $400. Which to me is A LOT for a vacuum. My choices narrowed down to buying it at Bed Bath and Beyond or buying it at Costco. It was about $20 cheaper at BBB… but I went with Costco specifically for their return policy.

As we all know, it is only a matter of time before a vacuum breaks… no matter how much you pay for it. The Bed Bath and Beyond policy only covered the vacuum for one year. However, the Costco policy was much, much better.

Costco’s Return Policy: We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell, and will refund your purchase price (exceptions and additional info here) That’s right. If the vacuum breaks EVER, they will return your money.

So, I happily went to Costco and bought my new vacuum. I mean I wasn’t *happy* about spending $400 on an appliance. But you know what I mean. So yeah, this was way back in April 2017 and I had four years of awesome vacuuming experiences.

And then last month, my Dyson stopped working.

While I had tentatively planned for this to happen one day, I was suddenly nervous about whether Costco would really replace my broken vacuum. Even worse, I couldn’t find my receipt.

So, I loaded up all my vacuum pieces into a bag and drove on over to Costco. I walked up to the friendly guy at the Member Services desk and let him know that my vacuum stopped working and I’d like to return or exchange it. He scanned in my membership card, started click-clicking around on his computer and immediately pulled up my receipt. Within a couple minutes, he refunded $400 to my credit card.

It was THAT EASY.

To say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. I couldn’t believe that I could walk in with a broken vacuum cleaner in a bag with no receipt from 4 years ago and they would magically give me my money back. As an added bonus, they now had a newer version of my vacuum for $75 CHEAPER than I paid.

So, of course I turned right back around and gave Costco back my money to buy the Dyson V8. I mean, with a return policy like that they have certainly earned my business!

  1. Wow. I had no idea about the return policy. That’s awesome! Congrats on the new vacuum (yes, I find stuff like this exciting).

    1. I have the cord model, still working, but bought through QVC, and I have no idea what the return policy is. But, when it breaks, I will be sure to check out the Costco! Thanks.

        1. I did. Costco refunded the original price paid and I was able to buy a new Dyson paying a little more for the upgrade.

    2. I have a similar issue with my vacuum’s warranty expiring 12/29/21 with Dyson. I just called Costco and told them my story and asked if because I bought my vacuum with my Visa, the warranty is extended as they mentioned and if it applies to my Dyson Handheld vacuum and they said I am welcomed to bring my vacuum back if I am not satisfied with it or something is wrong with it. I asked, “really?” And the lady replied, “yes” So I will bring it shortly. PS: my vacuum’s battery started having charging issues before the warranty expired but I couldn’t find the time to call Dyson 🙁 it is a lot of money we paid for it. I look forward to get it replaced.

  2. Just bought my Dyson Animal 2 from Costco. Price for a Dyson was hard to swallow, but that Costco warranty made me comfortable. Then I used my Dyson. Umm, WOW! Incredible job.

  3. Maybe every Costco was different…I have a V7 Animal purchased back in 2019. It stopped charging a couple of days ago and I called Costco to see if I can return. The person I spoke to actually gave me a hard time about it and said she needs to ask her manager and call me back.. Wondering if I should try a different Costco?

    1. I would print out the Costco Return policy and bring it with you to the store with your return. It’s pretty clear that they should accept the return if it was bought from them.

    2. You don’t call and ask, instead, bring it in person and once they trace it on their card, they will fully refund your money.

  4. Same issue here. I bought the Animal V8 in mid 2018 from Costco, and now the battery is pretty lame. Especially the Max mode. I called their support line (had to wait on line for half an hour) and got a nice enough lady, but she said the warranty is 2 years, and the best she could do was offer me a 50% discount on a new battery – $80.

She said the battery runs down faster if (1) you leave it plugged in all the time, and (2) you use Max a lot. I still have the operating manual and I don’t see where it says NOT to leave it on the dock when not in use. There’s a little graphic indicating one should charge it for 5 hours. I took that to mean that you need 5 hours to fully charge it.

When I paid $400 for the thing I didn’t realize that I would be needing to replace the battery every 3-4 years to the tune of $140. Not sure I want a cordless model anymore. Not if I have to babysit it to make sure it isn’t overcharged and/or plan ahead to charge it 5 hours before vacuuming.

    1. I keep mine plugged in at all times and haven’t had any issues. I would just take it back to a Costco store to do a return and then buy a replacement from them. Their return policy is pretty clear that they should take it back with no issues.

  5. I just returned my 3 year old Dyson at Costco because the battery was dying. No problem! Though I feel a little bit bad about it, a 3 year old vacuum should not need a major repair . . . that’s Dyson’s problem.
Despite the defect I do love the Dyson so turned around and bought another one. Maybe they should make their vaccums with replacement batteries like some of the other brands.
This experience makes me want to buy all my stuff at Costco.

  6. I just went through Hell and back with Dyson over a 2 1/2 year old Animal V7. The motorhead brush disintegrated, I ordered a new one that ended up having a 4 prong fitting, but the motorhead shaft had 3 prongs. Turns out the correct brush is discontinued. I contacted Dyson , was advised my V7 was out of warranty and was told I need a new motorhead, only because the brush was discontinued, but the motorhead was back ordered with no delivery date available, but they would give me a 20% discount on a whole new unit if I ordered it from Dyson, but the whole unit was also back ordered. My old vacuum still worked except for the lack of a replacement brush! I wrote back and expressed my disappointment. Then I read all of the posts from others that took their Dysons back to Costco, which I just did and was cheerfully given a credit for what I originally paid! WOW! Does Costco rock, or what? I took my credit, then went and bought a new V10 complete with a new warranty.

  7. Did anyone return the charging dock along with the accessories and vacuum itself? Does Costco ask for the accessories? I feel like I may have lost one accessory. Thank you in advance.

    1. I have the same question. My vacuum stopped charging and want to take it back to Costco but not sure if they will take it back without all the pieces
