The Slow Death of Blogging

The internet has been proclaiming that blogging is dying for the last 5 years. Or maybe even more. With lots of other social media platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, etc, people have been moving towards the micro-blogging of their thoughts. Lots of those rockstar bloggers have closed shop. Lots of people have just gotten bored of reading blogs.

I started Pocketful of Joules over 7 years ago… and I get it.

Over the past 7 years, I grew a pretty big following and then it ebbed and flowed and has slowly been decreasing over the past few years. The way readers interact with blogs has changed too. It was typical to get lots of comments on a blog post… and now I have many posts that have lots of visitors, but they don’t get even one comment. I used to check my stats every single day to make sure everything was *okay* with my numbers. Now, I don’t really bother and may check Google Analytics a few times a month.

Over the past 7 years, I have published 1,007 posts.

And I still enjoy it.

However, I don’t really enjoy a lot of what blogging has become. There are SO MANY bloggers that are basically just trying to sell, sell, sell shit to you so that they can make money. There are lots of copy-cat bloggers out there who don’t bother to put in any of the work.  There are so many bloggers that are just boring (or unable to write a proper sentence). And don’t even get me started on those super curated fake-ass Instagram accounts.

A few years ago, I read probably 20 blogs regularly. Now, that number is down to just 6 blogs. I haven’t added a new blog to my list in probably a year.

I honestly don’t know how much longer I’ll be blogging. I guess as long as I still enjoy it.

So, here are my questions for you:

1. What are your thoughts on the death of blogging?
2. Do you still enjoy visiting Pocketful of Joules?
3. What other blogs do you read?

Like what you see? Share me with your friends!

  1. Hi Joules,

First of all, I really don’t have any thoughts on the possible death of blogging. Second, I love reading your blog, the fun things you do, the interesting stuff you buy, your adorable family. Third, I only read two other blogs and one I don’t know if I would call it a blog anymore, she mostly sells her products on it. I hope you don’t stop anytime soon, I enjoy reading it so much.

  2. 1. I hope blogs don’t die out completely. It can be a lot of work unless it is somehow connected to your job. I’ve had a blog off and on for 20 years, but stopped paying for Typepad last year because I just wasn’t using it enough to justify spending money on it.

    2. I started following you when I was looking for people who reviewed their Stitch Fix boxes and enjoy your fashion-related content. I will comment if I have something useful to add, but otherwise don’t, which I know from experience is a little demoralizing, to see traffic but have little interaction.

    3. I follow a lot of news sites and crafting sites — I use Feedly, which makes it easy to devour a lot of content.

  3. I enjoy reading your blog. We’re about the same age and I love your keeping it real style. I read about a dozen blogs. Most of them are home and lifestyle blogs with a little fashion mix.

  4. Your blog is pretty much the only one I look at. I like to look at the stuff you find when bargain shopping. Your style reminds me a lot of one my friends. I follow you on Instagram, but still enjoy reading your blog.

  5. I really enjoy your blog. Found you through Stitch Fix reviews. I love your real attitude and “non-fake ness”. I still read several blogs fairly regularly although I’m not a blogger myself. I also don’t regularly comment on anyone’s but felt you deserved some feedback here. I hope you continue your blog. I also read Crazy Together, Lady Goo Goo Gaga, Bower Power, Thrifty Decor Chick, I Heart Organizing and TwoTwentyOne. Mostly read home design and lifestyle blogs. Good luck!!

  6. I will admit it’s easier to scroll through Instagram than click onto a blog. But you are the only one I still make the extra “effort” to click on the actual blog for. All of the other “bloggers” I follow are so cookie cutter – super skinny with hair extensions and overly posed photos. They all seem to be pushing the same items from Nordstrom so I feel you are more original, real and likable 🙂

  7. I love your blog! please don’t leave. I only read 4 blogs.
Yours, meals and miles, daily garnish, and christy tyler photography blog. None of the blogs I follow regularly sell things -a few sponsored posts maybe but overwhelmingly about family/career/life/fashion stuff. I love that your perspective on fashion. I am (and always have been) somewhere between a size 8-14 and appreciate reading reviews from someone who also curvy. Also someone who juggles mom responsibilities, work from home, and in the office. THANKS JULES

Oh and like someone else said I typically comment and chirp up if you are asking for feedback (like today) but otherwise just visit.

  8. 1. Seems like many bloggers are getting burnt out and. Ant find new topics
    2. I just found your blog this week and have enjoyed reading through past posts
    3. I follow Eating my way through OC and Nautical Furnishings. Other blogs that I followed have disappeared.
I wish I could find more to follow but so many post so randomly it is difficult to follow.

  9. Hello! I actually sort of blog still, but not really. I just finished my first year of teaching, and am currently in the starting stages of a move from Alaska to California, so yeah… not a lot of time for blogging. I do hope to get my act together and start blogging again as a crafty-diy-teacher lady who does outfit/thrifting posts once in a while. But, probably not until late summer.

I think blogging takes a lot more time that people have available these days. The other social media platforms that exist now that didn’t before consume the time I would have spent blogging. I think readers have gone to these platforms for convenience, and bloggers have gone to where their audience is. It’s sad and I miss it. I don’t even read blogs anymore. I don’t think my favs still publish. 🙁

  10. Keep on blogging! I have a craft blog that I started in 2006 or so, and it has ebbed and flowed…but I still love writing it and sharing on it. I still see lots of looks but very few comments. I am going to keep writing it! I found your blog via Pinterest, and come over and read your posts in big batches. 😉 I love your thrift shares! I still love reading a blog over the other social media choices. Blessings!
