My First 5k of 2016

One of the things that I love about winter moving its butt out the door and spring dancing on in, is that the 5k’s are plentiful.

As I mentioned in March, I really want to try and do a different 5k each month. The first one on my schedule was this past weekend: the Ocean City Island to Island Half Marathon & 5k.

The half marathon course was super cool and actually went from Assateague Island to the boardwalk in Ocean City (hence, the “island to island” theme). The 5k stuck to Ocean City – starting off at the inlet, running up the boardwalk to 17th street, and then back to where we started.

My sister, Katie, had signed up for the half marathon. It was her first time doing a half marathon race and she proved that all us Harman girls are overachievers… because she won. That’s right; my sister came in FIRST for female half marathon runners:

I did NOT come in first for female 5k runners. I just wanted to get that out there. I did have a great time though and may have taken one of my favorite running pictures EVER.

I know that’s a lot to live up to, but after the race I was totally crossing my fingers that the race photographer got a picture of me when I crossed the finish line.

And by ‘crossed the finished line’ I actually mean when I was LEAPING across the finish line, like a total goof ball.

Nailed it.

Any ideas on how I can top this awesome picture at my next 5k?

  1. ROCK ON, GIRL! And to your superstar sister, too! (That’s you, Katie!). This one IS pretty epic and hard to beat, but here’s my two cents: For the next picture, I think you should do the cheerleader jump (straddle, hands reaching for feet), or the jump picture that photographers have people do.

I hope you all got Thrasher’s and then ate extra for me 😀

  2. This is a really funny finish line picture and definitely looks like a good race. I absolutely love 5Ks because it doesn’t require much training for me and they’re manageable, don’t take too much time and they’re fun! Great work!!

  3. Haha I love your photo – congrats on the first 5k of the year! I’ve done a couple of other distances but have my first 5k coming up next weekend. The thing that gets me is that around here it seems like they all schedule them for like the same 2 weekends, so I have to pick and choose which ones I want to do.

And OMG your sister – it was her first half?? That’s amazing! What was her time?

  4. I love this SOOO MUCH! I’m training to run a 5K now and I cannot wait to leap across the finish line. And my gosh, now I have to do it in a kicky skirt like that too! BIG CONGRATS to your sister! Badass!

  5. How fun! And that picture is amazing! My finish line photos are never that fun… Love your idea of running a different 5k each month – I’ll have to give that a go.

  6. Yay!! Congrats to your sister!! That is amazing!! And congrats to you too!! I love me some 5k’s!! I just ran my first Half this past December. Let me know if you would be down to collab on a virtual 5K post I will be doing this summer!! =)

  7. What an amazing picture! That makes running a 5K look like so much fun! 😉 Congrats and good luck on running all those races!

  8. Haha! Oh my gosh, I love this picture! I think for your next one you should run across with both hands in the air making “rock on” symbols and have your eyes closed like you’re jamming to your own song… although that might be dangerous. But it’s all part of the fun! 😉 I really want to run a half marathon this year, I’ve only ever run 5 ks, but we’ll see.

  9. Holy crap – first place and her first half marathon?!? #superwoman

I absolutely LOVE your finish line picture!!! I may be using it as inspiration for my next 5K!

  10. Well done! The main thing is you are absolutely beaming at the end – looked like you had fun! Keep up the great work

  11. You have made running look effortless and a lot of fun—neither of which I have when I try to run. Congratulations on a job well done, and may you improve your time next time.
