Movie Talk: Halloween Treats

director-dvd-logoLet me start by saying, I am NOT a scary movie person. My husband and his friends dragged me to one of those Saw movies a decade ago and I literally sat in the theater with my knees in front of my face and my hands over my eyes. The WHOLE TIME.

So yeah, if you are looking for a list of scary movies… you’re not going to find it here. However, If you like to get into the mood of the season with candy corn goodness, you’re totally in the right place!

Here are 5 of my favorite freaky fun Halloween movies that won’t scare the pants off you:

Hocus Pocus
No Halloween movie list is complete without this 90’s gem with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. This is a great movie to get into the spirt of the season and it is really funny too.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Back when I was in college, we would totally dress up and go to midnight showings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It’s a great way to usher in the season, even if you are just throwing toast at the TV in the comfort of your living room. And yes, I know a new version just came out… but the original is a total classic for a reason.

The Nightmare Before Christmas
Even though this movie came out in the mid-nineties, it took me until a couple years ago to finally see it. The movie is a great mix of creepy and cool and I’d totally feel comfortable watching it with Jack… without worrying that either of us would get nightmares.

Casper
Apparently all my favorite Halloween movies came out when I was in high school, because this one was from 1995 and is still really awesome. I mean, who doesn’t love Christina Ricci and the adorable ghost cutie she befriends?!

Ghostbusters
Sure, you can go for the original old-school Ghostbusters, but I totally LOVED the new version that came out over the summer. I admit, I was rethinking the whole ‘watching it by myself in a theater’ when the first ghost started showing up on screen… but it wasn’t too scary for this self-proclaimed scardy cat.

Oh and speaking of corny fun…

What do you get when you cross a vampire with a computer?
A know-it-all, that’s really a pain in the neck.

What is your favorite Halloween movie?

  1. Loved the new Ghostbusters. I think that the critics were unfair to it. I saw it in the theaters for a girls’ night and am looking forward to watching it at home with the husband.

  2. I have to say I love terrifying movies but have to watch a few cute one’s too in my book. Hocus Pocus is the top of my list! I’ve seen all of your suggestions except the newest Ghostbusters movie. I’ll have to put that on my wish list! Thank you for sharing your favorites!

  3. My husband still hasn’t watched Hocus Pocus. When he told me that, my reaction was “Have you been living under a rock?” lol Needless to say we’re watching it this weekend!

  4. I thought that I left a comment – but I don’t see it. Sorry!

I still haven’t seen the new version of Ghostbusters, but I really want to. I still remember watching Casper for the first time. It was so magical and I totally wanted a Casper for my new home when I moved. Lol.

Excellent choices. Have you watched the Worst Witch? Omg… so good. Classic and has Tim Curry in it as well.
