My Favorite Piece of Advice to Give

So I was chatting with one of my favorite people in the world and a piece of advice I had repeatedly given her came up in conversation. This is a piece of advice that I’ve given myself, my husband, my closest friends, my sisters and brother…and now I want to give it to you.

Are you ready for it? Because I’m about to totally blow your mind right now.

Okay, here it is:

You are the boss of you.

Profound, right?

Okay, not really. But it’s amazing how often we all need to be reminded that we are in charge of our own lives.

I’ve given this advice to help someone decide whether they wanted to stay in an unsatisfying relationship. I’ve also used these same words when dealing with a bully boss. It’s amazing how easy it is to forget to take our own feelings into consideration when you’re being pummeled by what everyone else wants.

How many times have you gotten unsolicited advice about an area of your life? Whether it be what you should do with your relationships, your career, or even your child. Everyone likes to put in their two cents and expects you to follow whatever they have to say. Because they’re always right, right?

YOU are the boss of YOU

Now this isn’t a way to justify being selfish or hurtful to other people. Just a reminder to fully think about what YOU want, instead of taking the easy way out and doing whatever other people may want you to do.

It’s gotten to be a joke between my friend and I. Whenever she is telling me a story about how someone is crossing the line into her territory of happiness, we shout out “YOU ARE THE BOSS OF YOU!”  And we don’t put up with that crap!

So there it is, Joules in a jar. If you are ever wondering what my advice would be to you for any given issue, most of the time it would be to remind you to take the reins of your life and be in charge of it.

Like what you see? Share me with your friends!
