Checking out Origami Owl… and announcing a GIVEAWAY!

Origami Owl ReviewIf you’ve been following along on the Pocketful of Joules Facebook page or Instagram account you may have heard a little bit about my new obsession with Origami Owl.

Origami Owl was founded in 2010 by Bella, a cutie-pie 14 year old who wanted to earn enough money to buy a car for her 16th birthday. Over the past couple years the company has grown from one teenager to thousands of women who are hugely passionate about both the jewelry and the Origami Owl mission: “To be a force for good; To love, inspire and motivate women of all ages to reach their dreams and empower them to make a difference in the lives of others.”

Super cool, right?!

So, I put out a call on my Facebook and Twitter accounts to see if any Independent Designers from Origami Owl would be interested in working with me… and found Angie Carter. Angie is one of those ladies who are so passionate about Origami Owl that it’s now her full-time job! In addition to being excited about the company, she’s also a total sweetheart.

Through Angie, I created my very own Living Locket, which is like a MUCH cooler version of a charm bracelet. You choose every single thing – the locket, the chain, all the tiny little charms, dangle charms and more – to make yourself a one-of-a-kind necklace. The best part is that you can switch the charms out any time your heart desires to keep your necklace fresh and fun!

Here’s the necklace I designed:

all the pieces
How cute is the packaging?! I love the takeout box and the little fortune cookie that you can use to store your necklace when you’re not wearing it!
necklace close up
Here’s a super close-up of my Origami Owl necklace! I love every darn thing about it and have worn it every day since it came in the mail!

Here’s what I chose for my necklace:

  • 32″ silver flat oval chain
  • Large silver locket
  • Two plates: one large “family” plate in rose gold and a small “love” plate in gold
  • Round birthstone charms for myself, my husband and our son (September, April and February)
  • Two shaped charms: a crystal star (which signifies family to me… in fact I have a star tattoo on my foot for that same reason) and a silver “D” for our last name
  • Two dangles to make it look “charm-bracelet-y” – the silver heart and vintage pearl

To say I love this necklace is a total understatement – we went to Florida last week and I wore it every single day. I LOVE this necklace!

Oh, you want proof? Check this out…

Yeah, that’s me rocking it out on the beach!

And here I am with a frosty margarita… and my favorite necklace. And yes, I know I wore this shirt in the first picture but it was totally still clean so I wore it again for dinner the next night!

Here I am, eating again. Or modeling the latest in cheddar cheese fish… and my necklace.

The best part is that the locket isn’t just a “mommy” necklace, even though mine signifies my amazing family. You could create a necklace for a special little ladies’ 5th birthday by including a sparkly “5” and charms signifying her favorite hobbies. You could even create a locket for your best friend who survived cancer by including a breast cancer awareness ribbon and the ‘best friends’ charms. So sweet!

So what do you think… do you want to win one of these adorable Living Lockets for yourself? Because Angie is totally hooking one lucky reader up with a $50 credit towards their very own necklace!

4/10/13 Update: The contest is now closed and a winner has been announced!

Disclosure: I was provided a Living Locket to review for free; however all thoughts and opinions in this review are my own. Angie is so generously providing the winner with a $50 credit to use towards their locket, chain, plates and charms but not for tax or shipping costs.

My Living Locket would have to have a laptop and I Love to Read charm, my Birthstone along with my grandchildren’s, and possibly a Happy Face to remind me to smile. 🙂

  18. I would choose:
1: Birthstones for January, October and December for my daughter, myself and my husband
2: The crystal star, just because it’s so cute
3: An “E” for my daughter’s name and
4: the “I Love You” postcard for my husband and I

  19. Hope you do well with your running and Shred program. If I won the origami owl giveaway, I’d love the wineglass, daisy and letter “T”

      1. Oops! I thought it would get more specific if I actually won! Ha ha! The large silver locket with crystals on the edge, 32 inch flat silver oval chain and the large pink gold plate that says “wish” and a smaller silver plate that says “dream” (not forgetting the daisy, wineglass and “T” mentioned earlier). The daisy reminds me of my Mom – her fave flower, and I’m a girl that enjoys her wine! Origami Owl has such beautiful pieces!

  20. These necklaces are amazing! I would love to win one! All of the charms are so cute!

If I won, I would probably create a necklace to celebrate the birth of my amazing son Parker! I would get his birthstone and the baby carriage and baby feet with the mom and love life plate and the 2012 charm for his birth year. 

I also love the necklace that you created! I have never seen one with the two plates. I also liked Angie’s page. PS – I love to read your blog posts. They are always so funny and entertaining!

  21. Wow. That is really cute! I’ve always wanted a charm bracelet, but this would be even better. I would HAVE to have the “love to read” charm and probably the “laptop” charm, too, because I live on my computer. I would want the birthstones for June and March for my girls, possibly an ‘S’ charm because both of their names begin with S, and maybe a 1 and a 3 to make my lucky number 13.

I ‘liked’ their page as well.

  22. It’s very cute and fun!

I think I would have a sewing machine, scissors, the running shoe, a couple of various dangles, the large silver locket with crystals, dream plate, and initials.

And I liked the facebook page too.

  27. I have no clue if it would all fit, but one for each of my five children: ICHTHYS fish, enamel owl, ice cream cone, January boy and pink crystal crown; Forever Family and “D.” What a cool site. Now I’m dreaming…

  28. OMG! These are SO cute. Sorry it’s taken FOREVER for me to get over here.

I would NEED to have the heart lock and key (because I’m a shmoopy sap), the wine glass (because…well…obviously…) London telephone booth (as a friendship symbol with Katie) the sand dollar (for my love of the sea) though it does make me a little sad that there is no dolphin charm…

I’ve designed several of them in my mind. Joules, you rock.

Also, Angie: Any idea if they are allergy free metals?

Eiffel Tower – Love it want to see it in person
