If you’ve been following along on the Pocketful of Joules Facebook page or Instagram account you may have heard a little bit about my new obsession with Origami Owl.
Origami Owl was founded in 2010 by Bella, a cutie-pie 14 year old who wanted to earn enough money to buy a car for her 16th birthday. Over the past couple years the company has grown from one teenager to thousands of women who are hugely passionate about both the jewelry and the Origami Owl mission: “To be a force for good; To love, inspire and motivate women of all ages to reach their dreams and empower them to make a difference in the lives of others.”
Super cool, right?!
So, I put out a call on my Facebook and Twitter accounts to see if any Independent Designers from Origami Owl would be interested in working with me… and found Angie Carter. Angie is one of those ladies who are so passionate about Origami Owl that it’s now her full-time job! In addition to being excited about the company, she’s also a total sweetheart.
Through Angie, I created my very own Living Locket, which is like a MUCH cooler version of a charm bracelet. You choose every single thing – the locket, the chain, all the tiny little charms, dangle charms and more – to make yourself a one-of-a-kind necklace. The best part is that you can switch the charms out any time your heart desires to keep your necklace fresh and fun!
Here’s the necklace I designed:
Here’s what I chose for my necklace:
- 32″ silver flat oval chain
- Large silver locket
- Two plates: one large “family” plate in rose gold and a small “love” plate in gold
- Round birthstone charms for myself, my husband and our son (September, April and February)
- Two shaped charms: a crystal star (which signifies family to me… in fact I have a star tattoo on my foot for that same reason) and a silver “D” for our last name
- Two dangles to make it look “charm-bracelet-y” – the silver heart and vintage pearl
To say I love this necklace is a total understatement – we went to Florida last week and I wore it every single day. I LOVE this necklace!
Oh, you want proof? Check this out…
The best part is that the locket isn’t just a “mommy” necklace, even though mine signifies my amazing family. You could create a necklace for a special little ladies’ 5th birthday by including a sparkly “5” and charms signifying her favorite hobbies. You could even create a locket for your best friend who survived cancer by including a breast cancer awareness ribbon and the ‘best friends’ charms. So sweet!
So what do you think… do you want to win one of these adorable Living Lockets for yourself? Because Angie is totally hooking one lucky reader up with a $50 credit towards their very own necklace!

I love all the birthstone charms, the owl dangle. Oh, the cat, too! My necklace would be a zoo around my neck!!!
I also liked Angie’s FB page.
Thanks for the like. 🙂
Okay, I want one of these REALLY bad now. I’d obviously have to include the love to read charm… Although it pains me to see there is no penguin charm :(. But! I’d use the hummingbird charm because they’re the coolest part about gardening. And some flowers for sure. Oh my, I just want to design it all right now. I’m on my way to give the facebook page a likey-like!
I love the hummingbird too!
My necklace would be of family, girl power, love and music..and i would have a hard time limiting my choices..love Origami Owl, just never treated myself
Time to treat yourself for just being you!
I really, really, really love Origami Owl just so much! I’m not sure how all the charms I want would even fit so of course I am so glad they can be changed up.
Here ya go: Blessed inspiration tag, cross accent tag, “lovelife” large plate, “family” small plate, crystal anchor (bc cruising is my favorite & Tony loves boats, flip flops, my 3 boys birthstones and the key to my heart charm (1st piece of jewelry Tony ever bought me).
I love stacking the large plates with the small plate. 🙂
Truly adorable. Would definitely center around my 4 kids and myself…but the infinity charm would definitely be in there. Love my kids to inifinity and beyond lol 🙂
The inifinity is very popular.
Ok, here is my necklace! 1) Dog Bone (for my wonderful pup and love of pits) 2) Police Badge (for my awesome Hubby) 3) Angel wing (to represent my family) The only thing missing would be a Greek eye to keep evil at bay 🙂
Cute!
I had something like this many years ago and it was always a boost to wear it. Sadly- it’s disappeared between many moves, but I love the red shoe! No the fleur de lis! Wait- the wedding ring! Oh boy, the vintage gold cross. So many to choose from!
looks like its time for a new one.
Wow!! I love this product!!! I have been trying to think of something unique to give to my bridal party and I think that one of these made personally for each of them might just be it!! 🙂 On my own locket I would have to have the March birthstone, Wine Glass, Airplane & the silver L w/Crystals! Also, just liked her Fb page 🙂
I would love to bring Origami Owl to your special day<3
Yay! How adorable is this! How on Earth did you choose your charms??? I love the Doggy charm, the baby girl feet, the soccer ball, I love them all! So cute!
That is the hardest part… picking. (Part of the reason I became a designer!) LOL
I love the laptop and the hummingbird charm. Hummingbird has a story behind it. Will share it at Blogher. 🙂 I wish they had a marshmallow charm…… 😉
I would love to do something for Blogher….email me.
These are awesome! And I may have just won a giveaway but I totally want to enter for this one too!
I would choose:
Sea Turtle – hubby and I plan on crossing the Equator in our sailboat someday
Karma – to remember to treat others how I want to be treated
Tea cup – my sanity
Love to read – my obsession
Anchor – for our sailing adventures; also my hubby is my anchor in life
Starfish – cause it’s cute!
Sparrow – the symbol sailors use to remember to return to their families
Angel wing – grateful for those that watch over me
Key – I help people find their dream homes for a living
Even if I don’t win, I might have to buy one because I’m in love! =0)
I love the reasons behind your charms. I would love to help you out with an order. 🙂
I’ve seen this floating around the internet and I have to admit that I am in LOVE. OMG. Love the large locket, plumeria flower, crystal star, birthstones for all my family members, the K for our last name, tree of life dangle and the origami signature heart. I can TOTALLY see this necklace becoming my new go-to accessory!!

I’d do a vintage-inspired piece! I love the vintage crosses, cameos and watch gears! You know I’d make something killer 🙂
Don’t forget the pearl… classic
These are so pretty! I would have to have charms for music, reading, the plumeria flower, the cherries, and my daughter’s birthstone.
Love.
I liked Angie’s page too.
Can’t decide if I would keep it for myself or give to my BFF who showed me the Origami Owl jewelry in the first place

Maybe the pink pearl dangle, just for me. 🙂
Oh, and I forgot: medium silver locket!
Everyone needs a just something just for yourself.
Oh no, so my first comment didn’t appear!! here we go again. I liked An gie’s page and am really loving everything that this company stands for and all of the meaning and creativity that each person can put in to their necklace! I would select birth stones for my family members, flip flops for my love of warm weather, Palm tree for my love of the beach, sea horse for all things water and our aquarium at home, and a heart dangle for love for myself and others. yay now I really want to make one, but I’ll see if I win first!
Love what you picked!
Just found your site on the Congrats to all the 2013 Bloggie and Finalist Winners. Congratulations! I was excited to find that you are doing a give-away. My Living Locket would have to have a laptop and I Love to Read charm, my Birthstone along with my grandchildren’s, and possibly a Happy Face to remind me to smile. 🙂
Never forget to smile 🙂
I would choose:
1: Birthstones for January, October and December for my daughter, myself and my husband
2: The crystal star, just because it’s so cute
3: An “E” for my daughter’s name and
4: the “I Love You” postcard for my husband and I
I think the Postcard is super sweet!
Hope you do well with your running and Shred program. If I won the origami owl giveaway, I’d love the wineglass, daisy and letter “T”
Which locket?
Oops! I thought it would get more specific if I actually won! Ha ha! The large silver locket with crystals on the edge, 32 inch flat silver oval chain and the large pink gold plate that says “wish” and a smaller silver plate that says “dream” (not forgetting the daisy, wineglass and “T” mentioned earlier). The daisy reminds me of my Mom – her fave flower, and I’m a girl that enjoys her wine! Origami Owl has such beautiful pieces!
These necklaces are amazing! I would love to win one! All of the charms are so cute!
If I won, I would probably create a necklace to celebrate the birth of my amazing son Parker! I would get his birthstone and the baby carriage and baby feet with the mom and love life plate and the 2012 charm for his birth year.
I also love the necklace that you created! I have never seen one with the two plates. I also liked Angie’s page. PS – I love to read your blog posts. They are always so funny and entertaining!
better hurry I think the 2012 is going to retire on 4/16….
Love the I am and Blessed tags, jade birthstone and angel wing. My email is tracietrump@yahoo.com

Wow. That is really cute! I’ve always wanted a charm bracelet, but this would be even better. I would HAVE to have the “love to read” charm and probably the “laptop” charm, too, because I live on my computer. I would want the birthstones for June and March for my girls, possibly an ‘S’ charm because both of their names begin with S, and maybe a 1 and a 3 to make my lucky number 13.
I ‘liked’ their page as well.
Great creation. 🙂
I would have to get the anchor charm
Thank you for all the wonderful comments so far. I am so excited to do this giveaway!
I liked as Love at First Book on FB! 🙂
For mine, I love the idea of “I love to Read”, a radiant aqua stone, the crystal dog bone, maybe also the star of David, and then the small tree of life, with the Rosegold love plate!!! Too pretty!!!

I have to have the January Heart Birthstone for our son who was born 1/13/13 🙂
I love the one you designed! I love how Origami Owl just provides the hints and we can run with it. My dream necklace would include a book and a dog bone, for sure! I <3 Origami Owl!!
I have no clue if it would all fit, but one for each of my five children: ICHTHYS fish, enamel owl, ice cream cone, January boy and pink crystal crown; Forever Family and “D.” What a cool site. Now I’m dreaming…
OMG! These are SO cute. Sorry it’s taken FOREVER for me to get over here.
I would NEED to have the heart lock and key (because I’m a shmoopy sap), the wine glass (because…well…obviously…) London telephone booth (as a friendship symbol with Katie) the sand dollar (for my love of the sea) though it does make me a little sad that there is no dolphin charm…
I’ve designed several of them in my mind. Joules, you rock.
Also, Angie: Any idea if they are allergy free metals?
It took me a while bit I finally figured it out.
