October Thrift Haul

{Pssst, you can read about my previous thrifting adventures here}

One of the things that I love about thrifting, is that I often find fancy brands that I previously knew nothing about. There’s just something in the feel of the material, or the design of the item that forces me to grab my phone and start googling… and often I’m SHOCKED at what people are donating to thrift stores.

And that brings us to one of the items I thrifted in October… a Beryll cashmere poncho.

I was going through the sweaters rack, as I typically do because I love an oversized v-neck sweater, or a fancy embellished cardigan. As I was swishing through each hanger… I saw something black balled up and thrown on the top of the rack. So, I rescued it and was planning to hang it back on for some good thrift karma.

But then… when I felt it, I investigated the tag and found one I’d never seen before: Beryll. It felt super soft, so I figured I’d do a quick little google search.

And I found the exact item that I was holding in my hands.

That’s right. This crumpled up item that I found in my local thrift store was a 100% cashmere Beryll poncho. And if that’s not insane enough, it is STILL available on their website. For $550.

But here’s the kicker. Mine had a yellow thrift tag on it for $4.99… AND IT WAS HALF OFF YELLOW TAGS DAY!

This is the part where I almost started hyperventilating. Because I bought this $550 poncho for $2.50. That is literally less than I spend on my typical Starbucks order!

I’m thinking that this will be the perfect ‘wearable blanket’ for this winter when the weather gets chilly. I can throw it on while working from home (or working at the office, because it’s awfully nice) to keep me perfectly warm. Would I have paid $550 for it? Um… heck no. But at $2.50 I will feel extra fancy as I type away at my laptop.

I do realize I should just go ahead and end the blog post here, because there is no topping that score. However, I did also purchase two items from the home goods section of the thrift store on that same visit.

Woven basket, $5.99

I really liked this woven basket and it was in perfect condition with no broken pieces or splinters. It also has dividers inside, so it’s great for wine bottles or other stuff that you may want to display in it.

For now, I’ve added it to my front porch and filled it with some gourds. In the spring, I’m imagining adding a couple glass vases filled with wildflowers.

Autumn Harvest Vintage Pyrex, $3.99

I always breeze through the home goods section when I’m out and about, on the lookout for vintage Pyrex. This cute little bowl is the Autumn Harvest pattern, which was made from 1979 – 1986. It is in perfect condition with no chips or scratches in the paint or lid and at $3.99 it was an absolute steal. Here it is added into my china cabinet with my other Pyrex goodies:

So while I only had one opportunity to stop at a thrift store early in the month and I only picked up three items… I’m pretty darn happy with my October Thrift scores!

Our Front Entrance: The After

If you missed last week’s post, Our Front Entrance: The Before, now is your chance to go back and read it. There are some links to some awfully cute groundhog videos, but also some photos of how terrible our front entrance looked as of Tuesday morning.

Here’s one shot:

We hired a concrete contractor to dig out the mess of our sad front sidewalk/stones/weeds area and put in a brand spanking new stamped concrete walkway. I had a couple contractors come out to give me quotes, but we ended up going with Astlin Concrete Contractors. Rich, the owner, came out and gave us a super competitive quote, so I was happy to hire him.

The bulk of the work was done on Tuesday. I was at the office, but Travis was home and took a few ‘in progress’ photos for me. It was like HGTV porn all up in here.

Progress photos:

When I came home on Tuesday, it looked pretty great already. However, the driveway was a mess from all the concrete dust. Rich came back on Wednesday afternoon to do some hardcore power washing of the whole area. They let that dry and then on Thursday, one of his crew came back to blow everything off with a leaf blower and then apply two coats of sealer.

It needed another 24 hours to fully dry, so we took the caution tape down from the project on Friday night.

And now. NOW. We can finally see The After!

I mean… COME ON!? Look at that sexy new walkway?! Here’s a close up of the stamped design:

And here’s a little slider thingie so you can slide from the before to the after and be even more impressed with the update:

I’d say the project is about 95% done — we still need to pick up another load of the little brown rocks to refresh the area around the bushes. I also just ordered these solar pathway lights (12 pack for $18.99) from Amazon.

I am SO GLAD we finally decided to get this project done. I am super happy with Rich and Astlin Concrete Contractors and could not have asked for a smoother experience with having them come out and do the work for us.

Our Front Entrance: The Before

You guys, our front entrance is an absolute mess.

When we moved in, the previous owners had some weed-block down, covered with stepping stones and some brown stones. I wish I had a photo of it, but frankly it didn’t look great… so I guess I never bothered to photograph it.

A couple years ago, Travis couldn’t take it anymore and shoveled out the whole area, put down more weed-block, and added nicer stepping stones and river rock stones. It looked really great, until Countess Von Nibbles decided to build a hole directly in the path. {I highly recommend you check out this blog post, if only for the video}

Yes, that’s a groundhog.

She’s no longer with us (untimely death by vehicle) and we re-homed her children, Salt & Pepper, because they lived in the fenced in area of our backyard and decided that they were not afraid of Ollie. {Here’s that post if you want to revisit that cuteness}

Anywhoo, I went a little off track there…

The point is, that after the groundhog ripped a hole in the walkway… then the weeds came in. Because weed-blocker is crap and totally doesn’t work. And we hate weeding, but even when we would pull all the weeds they’d return with a vengeance.

And this is what our front entrance looked like this morning:

We are calling this the BEFORE of this Before and After job. Because while our front entrance looks like a mess today, it will look completely different tomorrow!

Since we ended up cancelling our vacations this year (thanks COVID), we decided to spend some money on hiring a concrete contractor to dig out the mess and put in a stamped concrete walkway.

I’ve looked at his other work and feel confident that he’s going to do a great job. However, for someone who likes to do everything herself, this is taking a big heap of trust. While I have a general idea how the finished product will look, I’m not totally sure how it will all end up, so I’m pretty excited to see the AFTER!
