Family Travel: Richmond Fun

Over the weekend, we attended my sister’s baby shower in Richmond, VA and decided that since it’s a 4-hour drive to get there… we might as well just stay for the weekend!

I did a TON of research when booking a hotel and still kind of feel like I just threw a dart at a map. We decided to stay at The Commonwealth, which is right next to Capitol Square. The hotel was beautiful and the suite was HUGE – we had a bedroom, a large bathroom and a living room with a sleeper sofa for Jack. They do valet parking, which was nice and convenient (for $28). They were also running a “VISA Worlds Offer” deal, which gave us 10% off the hotel price and 2 breakfasts included.

With that being said, the food at the hotel was terrible and insanely overpriced. The waitress/bartender was super nice each time, but I think they were also the cook for the food… which was kind of odd. We had a late dinner there after the baby shower on Saturday and there were a total of like 8 things on the entire menu. We ended up with a Caesar salad with shrimp (me), linguine with meat sauce (Travis), a chicken sandwich (Jack) and a bowl of ice cream and it was $60. Everything was pretty bland and totally not worth the cost. We did end up going back for breakfast since we had the two free breakfasts on the room promotion… and it was $72 for a lukewarm buffet for the three of us, 2 coffees and an orange juice (before the 2 meals were comped…which I had to email them about once we got home). Sigh.

Anyways, the hotel was great. The people were great. The food was not.

Saturday was basically just the drive to Richmond and the baby shower, so on Sunday we decided to do a little exploring before we hit the road to come back home. We started by walking around Capitol Square and checking out all the buildings and sculptures.

Then, we grabbed our stuff, checked out of our room and drove over to Maymount. They have a free parking lot and the place has over 100 acres between the historic estate, gardens and wildlife habitats.

We started out by exploring the Japanese Gardens. To say that they were beautiful is a total understatement. We explored the whole area, climbed up next to the waterfalls and watched the gigantic koi fish swim around.

From there, we made our way over to the wildlife habitat where we saw two bald eagles. I think this was the first time I’ve ever seen a bald eagle in person and they were SO CLOSE to us. Travis and Jack also compared their wingspan to the wingspan of the eagle…

We finished up over by the petting zoo area where we got to pet some friendly goats!

We LOVED Maymont and wished that we were able to stay for their evening event, the Garden Glow. We could see where all the lights were set up for when it was nighttime, so it must be absolutely beautiful.

From Maymont, we hit up the Mellow Mushroom, a delicious pizza place my sister recommends. We got the Funky Q. Chicken pizza and it was great, a mix of BBQ chicken, mozzarella and cheddar cheeses and Applewood smoked bacon. Highly recommend!

Since it was kind of our anniversary celebration too, we finished our day in Richmond at Shyndigz with a huge piece of fresh fruit cake. They have an adorable little outdoor eating tent, so we hung out at a table for our cake party and then Jack tried to catch some bubbles from their bubble machine.

I wish we had a few more days to stay and explore, because there were still a bunch of places I wanted to eat and the weather was beautiful. As it was, we hopped back in the car and drove 4-hours back home so that we could work and go to school the next morning.

DIY Jungle Animal Baby Shower Favors

It is a baby boom up in here with first my brother and wife’s baby (now 1), then my sister Katie and her husband’s baby (born over the summer) and now my sister Kelsey and her husband’s baby (December due date). I shared the Adorable Personalized M&M Favors I did for Katie’s baby shower back in June. Well, now it’s baby shower favor time for Kelsey’s jungle animal themed shower!

I’m pretty sure Kelsey isn’t a regular blog reader, but if so… LOOK AWAY from this post!

I wanted to do something edible and also tie in the jungle animal theme, which brought me to animal crackers. I mean, they’re perfect! I got a gigantic tub of animal crackers at Costco and also ordered cellphone baggies and some animal themed stickers off Amazon.

I made about 30 baggies of crackers and also mixed in a box of Zebra cakes, just for funsies. I mean, LOOK how cute they turned out:

I was going to use the same basket that I had thrifted for Katie’s shower favors, but needed a bit more space. So, I repurposed this green rope basket that I bought when Jack was a little baby to hold all the treats. The fun green colors also tie in well with the jungle theme.

And with that, I think I’m DONE on baby showers for a while. However, I’m just getting started with all the baby snuggling!

Doing All the Fall Things

While the Maryland weather hasn’t received the memo to bring me some fall cool temperatures, it’s nice to finally have some fun fall stuff to add to the schedule. Also, ALL the pumpkins.

Target Pumpkins

I picked up a few cheap pumpkins when I was at Target a few weeks ago, which worked out perfectly because it gave Jack something to do when we were stuck at home quarantining. I think the wood pumpkin was $5 and the set of two cardboard pumpkins were $5 — so $10 total for all 3. He colored the wooden pumpkin with crayons, and then used colored sharpies on the cardboard version. He made me do my own cardboard pumpkin, so knowing his obsession with tie-dye, I decided to tie-dye paint the pumpkin and he loved it!

Paint Your Own Pottery Session

My coworker gave me a gift card for a local pottery painting place that I had never visited, so I was happy to try somewhere new. Jack was excited because he LOVES anything artistic! He picked out a few different small items to paint and I chose a pumpkin for myself. For this one, I did an ombre look with a lighter orange at the top, a medium speckled orange in the middle and a dark orange at the bottom. They are going into the kiln on Friday and we should be able to pick them up this weekend, so I can’t wait to see how they turn out!

Carving Up Some Pumpkins

We picked up some ACTUAL pumpkins too and decided that each one of us would get to carve one. My husband carved the squinty laughing face, mine has ‘heart eyes’ and Jack’s is the toothy guy with a door in the side of his head. I also grabbed a couple warty pumpkins to add to the front porch for some extra fun.

And… a Corn Maze

If that isn’t enough fall pumpkin goodness for the month, we also met up with family at Gaver Farm. Gaver Farm is a super fun pumpkin farm in Frederick, Maryland and they have a ton of outdoor activities for their Fall festival. Our favorite(?) was the corn maze, where my sister, her husband, the baby and I wandered around lost for about 30 minutes. Honestly, the baby was NOT very helpful in determining direction… On our way out, we got some hot apple cider and fresh HOT apple cinnamon donuts and they were pretty fantastic.

I think that *might* be the extent of our fall stuff for a few weeks. We have a first birthday party coming up for my nephew and then a trip to Richmond for my sister’s baby shower. However, we have been considering the idea of a fall RV trip, so we will have to see what November brings us!
