My Style: Summer Favorites

21 Aug

Someone recently commented on an old My Style post, which reminded me that I used to write My Style posts… I stopped writing them about 2 years ago, because I was kind of bored of them (you can see my last one here). But now it’s been so long I’m thinking of resurrecting them on a seasonal basis.

I went through all my posted outfits from the June, July and August and picked my 5 favorites.

Outfit #1: Faux Wrap Dress + Runched Blazer + Thrifted Sandals

You all know I love a good wrap dress, and this pretty purple-ish number is no exception. I feel like it’s a little clashy with my current hair color, so I added my favorite black blazer to break it up a bit. The dress is from Leota and it’s the Mae dress in Petunia. I bought it on sale a year or so ago, but it looks like they have the same pattern in a sweetheart neckline in plus sizes (you can find it here).

This black blazer is my absolute favorite and I’ve had it and worn it for about 3+ years now and it’s holding up great. It’s the Amanda & Chelsea Signature Runched Sleeve Blazer from Nordstrom Rack for $60. You can find it here in petite sizes, straight sizes, and plus sizes. I get overheated easily, so this style with the ¾ sleeves works well for me! I thrifted the Tahari patent leather sandals in April for $8 and have worn them pretty frequently over the summer. I like how the shiny patent leather makes the comfy and casual sandal look a little extra fancy.

Outfit #2: Anthropologie dress + Saltwater Sandals

This photo is from when my husband and I had a date night of going to the Def Leppard/Journey concert and then doing some gambling at a nearby casino! I bought this old-school Anthropologie dress second-hand and I love the pretty pattern and the longer length of the skirt. I purchased the Saltwater Sandals early in the summer after liking them for a few years but never committing to buy them. I have probably worn them at least 2x a week all summer long! I got them from Modcloth for $45 (find them here) and even after all this wear, they still look as great as they did at the beginning of the summer.

If you follow me on Instagram, you may also recognize this photo from the illustration that @ajsgallery did for her #ootdartseries. She illustrated me in my outfit and I love how it turned out!

Outfit #3: My Pinup Swimsuit and some Arm Candy

How could this photo NOT make my summer fav’s round-up?! While down in OC celebrating my soon-to-be sister’s bachelorette weekend, we spotted these boys/guys/beefcakes/dudes(?) and I had to have a photo! I mean, we look like we totally matched our outfits on purpose!

This swimsuit has been one of my absolute favorites ever since Jack was born and this is the second version I have owned (the first lasted about 3 years before looking worn). When this one dies, I’ll be replacing it again… because it’s a magical sort of swimsuit that holds everything tight (including boobies and butt cheeks) and also looks awfully cute. Find it here in sizes 4 – 34!

Outfit #4: Landscape Dress + Thrifted Cardigan + Rothy’s

Here’s another secondhand Anthropologie dress that I totally swoon over. I spotted this dress on Poshmark, and scooped it up for $40. I love, love, love the watercolor landscape print and the super soft, flowy fabric. It has spaghetti straps, so it necessitates a cardigan for work – for both tattoo coverage and warmth. This sweater was thrifted, but is just your basic ¾ sleeve black cardigan.

You all are probably super bored of hearing me sigh over my Rothy’s, but these red flats have been my go-to shoes for a pop of color since they arrived in the mail. If you want to read ALL my thoughts on Rothy’s and whether I think they are worth the price tag, you can find my post here.

Outfit #5: Crazy Floral Jersey Dress + Thrifted Cardigan + Strappy Sandals

This is one of my favorite dresses from Boden, because of the incredibly light and soft jersey fabric. It is also somehow magical and really compliments curves while making me look a little thinner in my not-so-thin areas. It’s called the Willa Jersey Dress and it’s currently offered in a bunch of colors and on sale (find it here). The cardigan is the same one from my previous outfit, and it gets a lot of wear in my closet. I actually spotted a second one out thrifting and bought it for a backup.

Let’s talk about these shoes. They’re awfully cute, right? I’ve had them and have worn them for years, but now that I have much more comfortable options… these seem so much more painful. So, after this day at work, I immediately took them off my feet and threw them into my donate pile. See ya uncomfortable shoes!

What do you think… did you miss my My Style posts? Should I bring them back on a seasonal basis? Which is your favorite summer outfit? It’s the beefcake photo, right?!

My Style: Fall Favorites

30 Nov

I don’t know if you noticed, but I stopped doing my monthly My Style posts. I liked them originally, but then I just started thinking that they were kind of boring and repetitive… so I haven’t done one since the summer. However, today I was thinking about Fall fashion and thought I’d throw together a post that includes my favorite fall outfits.

Before we get into Fall looks, if you want to check out any previous My Style posts you can find them here.

Ok, let’s do it!

Outfit 1: A crazy patterned dress + black

If you look at my Instagram feed, it’s pretty clear that I love a crazy pattern. I originally posted about this Anthropologie swing dress in September (Styling a Swing Dress for an Hourglass Shape) and have worn it to work a bunch of times. My current favorite way to style the dress is with a black cardigan and booties, but soon I’ll be adding on some fleece-lined leggings and possibly some knee-boots to keep warm.

Some shopping links:

The Dress: Grasslands Midi Dress from Anthropologie, on super sale but only a few sizes left. I also really like the Zeri Peasant Dress (also on sale).

The Cardigan: It is very similar to the Cotton Caryn cardigan at the J.Crew Factory and there are currently 11 colors on sale for $19.50!

The Booties: The ones I have are by Franco Sarto, but I bought them last year and they are sold out. The Tom’s Desert Wedge bootie is quite similar though. I’ve also been eying the Tom’s Lunata Lace Up bootie and hoping they will go on sale so I can pull the trigger to buy them.

Outfit 2: A crazy patterned skirt + more black

You may be sensing a bit of theme here, but as a lover of crazy patterns I typically try to tone down the rest of my outfit. By pairing this pretty fall floral skirt with all black, I can really let it shine and also look office appropriate. I’ll probably pack this skirt away in a few weeks and then bring it back out next fall.

Some shopping links:

The Skirt: I actually got this skirt from Old Navy for something ridiculous like $12 a couple months ago. It’s long gone now, but they have a couple dresses that have a really similar print: the Tie Waist Crepe Midi Dress and the Fit and Flare Cami dress.

The Blazer: I love the Amanda & Chelsea ¾ sleeve blazers they have at Nordstrom Rack. I have this one in black and also a version with teeny-tiny polka dots. It looks like black is currently sold out, but you can find their Signature blazer in grey here for $59.97. I highly recommend it!

The Booties: same as Outfit #1

Outfit 3: A Grown-up Look + a bit of Fun

I feel like this look of blouse + pants + cardigan could have gotten really boring, REALLY fast. However, I think that the polka-dots on the blouse and the subtle animal print on the flats saved it from snoozeville. Now that I’ve found a formula that works, I’ll be throwing this comfy combo on whenever I’m stumped for what to wear in the morning.

Some shopping links:

The Cardigan: same as Outfit #1, in a different color

The Blouse: The blouse I’m wearing was another Anthropologie steal from ages ago, however their Everafter Blouse is quite similar.

The Trousers: I’ll admit these pants are a total splurge, but I have a feeling that I will be wearing them for so long that it will be worth it. They are the Eileen Fisher Stretch Crepe pants and I originally got them in navy from Trunk Club. I loved them so much that I knew I needed them in black too. I got really lucky though and found a pair on eBay for around $50. If you are thinking of going that route, I’d try some on in the store first to figure out your best size. I probably should have sized down to a medium (I’m typically a 12).

The Shoes: I have such a weakness for a great pair of animal print shoes. These are from Sole Society a year or two ago, and I’m always finding new ways to pair them. I recently ordered the Mimi Cheetah Dot boots when they went on sale for Black Friday and I can’t wait until they arrive! If you want a similar look to the ones in this outfit, check out the Nitsa Slip On Flats in Leopard. ME-OWWW.

What do you think… did you miss my My Style posts? Should I bring them back on a monthly basis, or maybe just do them by season?

My Style: June Favorite Outfits

30 Jun

I decided to do a little something different for this month’s My Style post. Instead of picking three of my favorite outfits from the month, I decided to show you what I wore to a professional conference last week.

When I was deciding what to bring with me to the conference, I chose outfits that wouldn’t wrinkle easily, would last through a full day of sessions and networking parties, and would also look professional.

Before we get into those outfits though, here’s a silly video with all of my June looks. Is anyone else totally obsessed with this song?

Okay, on to the conference looks!

Outfit #1: My Birdie Wrap Dress

My Style June - 1

I’ve professed my love for this wrap dress before and I’ll continue tweeting it from the rooftops. If you’re looking for a super soft and flattering jersey dress that can take you from teaching a class to attending a wedding, this is IT. The best part is you can roll it up in a suitcase and shake the wrinkles right out. Oh yeah, and you can totally eat dessert with both lunch and dinner and still hide that little food belly. It’s the Elena Fixed Wrap dress from Boden and it’s magical.

Outfit #2: Another Day, Another Boden Jersey Dress

My Style June - 2

That’s right, I wore two Boden jersey dresses in a row and I’m not even sorry. This one has a bit of a different look from the faux wrap dress, but still is both comfortable and professional. It’s the Glenda dress and it worked out great for those highly air conditioned conference rooms. I added a slim little belt from Old Navy to define the waist a bit.

Outfit #3: Feeling Lucky, Punk

My Style June - 3

Yup, yet another jersey dress… but this one is from Lucky Brand. Lucky was having a dress sale a few weeks ago, so I snapped up this super soft beauty for $39! It’s long gone off their website, but if you like a more boho-look to your dresses you will be in heaven over there. Some with a similar feel to the one I have is the Inset Lace Dress and the Pink Paisley Maxi dress. Both of them are on sale for 40% off right now too. So much boho goodness!

As for the sweater, I picked it up at the J.Crew Factory Outlet earlier this month (you can see my bargain finds post here) and will be wearing this year-round until it falls apart. It is the Factory Caryn Cardigan and you can find it here.

What is on your ‘must pack’ list for work conferences or fancy functions?

My Style: May Favorite Outfits

31 May

Yay it’s time for my monthly My Style post! May in Maryland this year was weird. Like, really weird. Typically around these parts, May is HOT and humid. But this year, we had something like 19 out of 23 straight days of rain. It was cold and super icky for almost the entire month!

I went through my May pictures and picked three of my favorite outfits to share with you.  If you see something you like, I’ve made it easy for you to steal my style with links for each item when still available, or similar styles if they’re sold out. If you want to check out previous My Style posts, you can find them here.

Look #1: Running Fabulous

My style May - 1

The Running Top
I don’t usually run in long sleeves, but when I got to Ocean City to pick up my race packet I realized that it was much colder than I had planned for! They don’t sell this one online, but some of my favorite running tops come from TJMaxx and Marshalls. This “I don’t Sweat, I Sparkle” tank top is pretty adorable and I also have a couple from Thug Life Shirts and this “Cardio & Coffee” one is totally on my list.

The Running Skirt
I just love a flippy running skirt, don’t you? My sisters – who actually run to be fast – totally make fun of me, but I don’t even care. Race skirts are ADORABLE! I got this one on clearance at Nordstrom Rack this year, but of course it’s long gone. I do totally love this Trina Turk printed running skirt, but they don’t have it in my size. This black pleated version at TJ Maxx is pretty great if you want something a little more subtle.

The Running Capris
There is nothing worse than wearing running clothes that move all over the place while you’re trying to trot on your way. These are the Soybu Allegro Capris in Dark Forest and I also own them in Pink Halftone. Believe me when I say that they are the BEST that I’ve ever run in and I want to order like 5 more pairs and throw everything else out!

Look #2: Office Polka Dots

My style May - 2

The Blazer
I have to wear blazers for work events and I always have a hard time finding one that will fit my figure. Typically there is some sort of weird shoulder pad thing happening, or it just looks like a giant box. I saw this pretty polka dotted version one at Nordstrom Rack one day and love how it is nipped in at the waist and has a little shirred cuff thing going on for a ¾ sleeve look. They still have it in limited sizes here or you can get it in solid black or grey here.

Look #3: It’s a Wrap… Dress

My style May - 3

The Dress
I had to do a marketing video at work that will be seen by an awful lot of people, so I basically tried my entire closet on before deciding to wear this fabulous Boden wrap dress. I wrote all about my Boden experience earlier this month (Trying Boden: Website vs Reality) and this exact dress is still on sale at this link.

The Shoes
Over the past couple months, I’ve read a bunch of posts from other bloggers about how incredible these Ugg sandals feel. They would go on and on and on about how comfortable they are, even with a higher wedge and finally I decided to try them for myself. Alicia sent me them in two colors when she sent my last Trunk Club order and OHMYGOSH are they comfortable and cute! I actually decided to buy both pairs to replace some that recently went to the great shoe closet in the sky. They are a little more expensive at $100, but I can truly say (in a non-sponsored way) that they are incredibly comfortable and I’ve gotten through a 12 hour workday and my feet still felt great. You can find them on the Nordstrom website here.

Do you have a favorite look? How do you fight back against days and days of yucky weather?
