My March Stitch Fix: Vacation Style

Oh boy, oh boy… a lot is riding on this Stitch Fix box. If you can believe it, this is Fix #30 and it may be my last…

{If you are interested in checking out all of my Fix reviews, you can click here}

After such an amazing experience with Trunk Club a few weeks ago (full post is here), I was starting to feel like maybe they would be the better fit for me. But, breaking up is really hard to do… so I decided to give Stitch Fix one more chance.

Since we have a vacation quickly approaching, I decided to focus on just vacation clothes. Here’s what I told my stylist:

Stylist Sara J again. We are going on a cruise in a couple weeks, so let’s do a vacation fix! Easy tops, shorts and maybe a dress for dinner. Would love to try a pair of kelly green or cobalt blue skinny jeans. To be honest, unless it really blows me away I think this will be my last Fix for a while.

And here is the note I got in my box:

Note from SF

So there you go, a new stylist for my ‘last chance box’ because my stylist of 20ish boxes is gone. Hmmm.

Well, let’s see what she sent…

Item #1: DIBA Layna Metal Embellished Sandals, $40

Well, lookie here… shoes! I had heard that Stitch Fix was about to launch shoes as part of their service, but I didn’t expect to get a pair already. The price is nice at just $40 and the style is nice. However, if you showed me the shoes and asked me to guess how much they are worth, I’d guess much, much lower.

Stitch Fix Review - Diba Layna Metal Embellished Sandals - Pocketful of Joules

On a quality scale, I’d put them similar to Target’s shoes or a little worse. I like the ‘toughness’ of the metal and double ankle straps, but when I opened the bag I saw that there is already a rip in the back of one in the faux leather.

Keep or Return? I’d much rather buy an expensive pair of shoes on sale for $40 than spend the same amount of money on a pair that look like they are worth $20. They are going back.

Item #2: Brixon Ivy Brae Scuba Dress, $68

Holy cheese and crackers this dress is ugly! Wait, that’s kind of mean… let me think of something nice to say. Um, I like the fit-and-flare shape.

Stitch Fix Review - Brixon Ivy Brae Scuba Dress - Pocketful of Joules

But WOW is that pattern ugly. I also really dislike the transparent netting at the top where you can see through to bra straps. And it’s called ‘scuba’ fabric, but it’s really just a thick polyester that makes me concerned about standing too near a candle flame. Sorry new stylist, this is strike #2… the dress is just horrible.

Keep or Return? It’s like an ice skating costume, or something you’d find in the teen section from 1978. I can’t shove this into the box fast enough. My eyes hurt… MY EYES!

Item #3: Pixley Jimson Zipper Detail Top, $54

I know some people like the whole ‘zippers as a design element’ thing, but I’m just not a fan. Whenever I see something like this I just think it would be awfully good for breastfeeding. Or getting out of a speeding ticket…just unzip the front as low as you dare!

Stitch Fix Review - Pixley Jimson Zipper Detail Top - Pocketful of Joules

Keep or Return? “I’m sorry officer, was I driving too fast…?” Nope, not gonna happen.

Item #4: Level 99 Cindie Linen Printed Short, $78

I’m not really a shorts person, so I was curious what they would send for me to try for my vacation. If I had seen these in a store, I would never have tried them on because I tend to lean towards classic jean shorts and this pattern is A LOT of pattern.

Stitch Fix Review - Level 99 Cindie Linen Printed Short - Pocketful of Joules

On the positive side, the shorts are made out of Tencel so they are very soft and stretchy. They just don’t really look that good on me and I feel like I’m wearing pajama shorts.

Keep or Return? To pay $78 for a pair of shorts I’d have to REALLY love them. And I don’t.

Item #5: Papermoon Dafilia V-Neck Drape Back Knit Top, $44

Thank goodness for this top, because this entire Fix was almost a bust and I really hate to lose my $20 styling fee. From the front this is a nice, classic tank top… but the little twist in the back gives it a little something extra. It is also made out of 95% rayon and 5% spandex, so it’s a bit dressier than a typical cotton tank top.

Stitch Fix Review - Papermoon Dafilia V Neck Drape Back Knit top - Pocketful of Joules

It is a bit too fitted on my tummy, but I got around that by tucking it into a high-waisted skirt (I got this one from Talbot’s last year).

Keep or Return? I like this top enough to keep it (and not lose my $20), but honestly if the styling fee weren’t in play I don’t know if I’d keep this one. The color is pretty and the back is interesting though, so hopefully I’ll get some wear out of it.

Well, it looks like an easy decision on what I’m going to buy for my 30th Fix, but now I have a bigger decision to make…

Is this the end of my love affair with Stitch Fix?

Should I take this Fix (and my new stylist) as a sign and quit Stitch Fix for good? Or maybe I should just ‘take a break’ and see other people for a few months. Maybe you think I’m overreacting and need to give them another shot. So, take it on down to the comments and tell me what you think!

My February Stitch Fix: Was “Surprise Me” the Best Choice?

I’m super excited that it’s Stitch Fix Day up here in the Joules house!

Even though my stylist has been doing quite well on sending things that fit in with my style and my life, my last ‘buy it all’ Fix was way back in September (and I ended up selling a couple items online afterwards). Since then, I pretty much only find one item in each Fix that I love enough to buy.

Some of you may consider this a failure, but I’d much rather have one item a month that I’m ecstatic about rather than a closet full of stuff I only kind of like. It’s also better for my budget that I don’t break the bank every single month!

{If you are interested in checking out all of my Fix reviews, you can click here. This Fix is #29… so I’m kind of a fan!}

I’m planning on asking for a ‘vacation Fix’ next month, but for February I decided to mix it up a little. Here’s what I told my stylist:

I’m dying to try the Brixon Ivy Jarred Lace Detail Cap-Sleeve Blouse in black! I just pinned a ton of new stuff, so look around and send me a fun surprise Fix!

Did she deliver? Let’s check it out:

Item #1: Skies are Blue Myriam Lace Knit Dress, $58
Okay, so the navy and white stripes + lace are totally my jam. In fact, I just recently bought a top that could be a sister to this dress (check it out here).

Stitch Fix Review - Skies are Blue Myriam Lace Knit Dress - Pocketful of Joules

Sources: Similar cardigan and similar sandals.

We will be going on vacation in a few weeks, so I styled this with a pair of black sandals for a cute vacation look. For the second outfit, I added a bright floral belt and green cardigan.

Keep or Return? While I do like the stripes and lace combo, I just don’t really think that this dress is very flattering on my shape. Looks like a return.

Item #2 Market & Spruce Corianna Striped Dolman Top, $48 and
#3 Skies are Blue Kembla Raglan Sleeve Jacket, $68
First off, let’s talk about the dolman-sleeved top. I know that a lot of people really like them, but I really dislike the bat-like sleeves. I tried one a couple years ago (purchased from a Fix) but ended up giving it to a friend because I just kept avoiding it in my closet. I even have a note in my account for NO DOLMAN tops, so I’m not sure why she sent me this one. With all that being said, this one doesn’t actually look like a dolman top and the sleeves aren’t that weird.

As for the jacket, Stitch Fix recently pinned this jacket and I loved the whole outfit (you can see the pin here) so I pinned it on my own ‘Fix Inspiration’ page. Although it’s called a jacket, it’s actually a sweater/cardigan. My stylist suggested trying the two items together, so I did:

Sources: Exact jeans, similar red Tom’s, exact black flats.

For the first look, I just paired the dolman sleeve top with jeans and comfy shoes. For the second outfit, I switched out the shoes for flats and added on the jacket.

Keep or Return: I’m completely surprised to say that I don’t hate the dolman top. It’s a really nice knit fabric and drapes really well. The cardigan is also nice, but a little too preppy for me. I’m leaning towards sending both of these back. What do you think?

Item #4: Brixon Ivy Jarred Lace Detail Cap-Sleeve Blouse, $68
YES! I’ve had this blouse pinned for months and months! I’ve been obsessing over the pretty lace details and can see myself mixing this in with a ton of different outfits. Here is a close up of the gorgeous detailing on the back… and a sneak peek of my unfinished tattoo:

Stitch Fix Review - Brixon Ivy Jarred Lace Detail Cap-Sleeve Blouse - detail - Pocketful of Joules

And here are two different ways I tried styling it:

Stitch Fix Review - Brixon Ivy Jarred Lace Detail Cap-Sleeve Blouse - Pocketful of Joules

Sources: Skirt is long sold out (Anthropologie), exact jeans, exact booties in a different color.

For the first look, I tucked it in to a high-waisted swing skirt and LOVE this look so much that I kind of want to just wear it around the house right now. For the second outfit I paired it with skinny jeans and cute booties.

Keep or Return? I love it so much and I’m definitely going to buy it!

Item #5: Staccato Dolan Open Cardigan, $64
This fun sweater is another one I recently pinned. I really liked the navy and white pattern and could imagine wearing it for a more casual workday or just on the weekend over a t-shirt and jeans.

Stitch Fix Review - Staccato Dolan Open Cardigan - Pocketful of Joules

Sources: Similar tee, exact jeans.

I styled it with a comfy tee and knee boots for my typical leaving-the-house-on-a-weekend look.

Keep or Return? I really like this sweater because it has an interesting pattern and it’s super comfortable. My only concern is that it’s kind of warm. Which is great in the dead of winter if I’m spending a lot of time outside… but most of the time I run kind of hot and don’t need this much warmth. Another factor to consider, my husband hates it. So, there’s that.

Help Me!
So now it’s time for the fun part… what do you think should I buy? I’m leaning towards just buying the Brixton Ivy blouse, but I’d love to know your thoughts! Oh, and what do you think of my new red lipstick (it’s this one in “Red Door Red”) — is it a keeper?

2/25/16 Update: it was a super easy decision and I ended up keeping the Brixton Ivy blouse and can’t wait to wear it!

My January Stitch Fix: Back to Work

With January being the month of the full-house purge over here, I was excited to see what Stitch Fix decided to send me. I know that sounds kind of backwards, but by purging so much I feel like it will help me be harsher than ever when deciding what to buy. Otherwise, the items would just join my sell pile in a few months. (PS, if you want tips for selling clothes on FB, check out this post)

I just got a really great box with some casual clothes from Trendsend a couple weeks ago, so I knew that I wanted to go in a different direction for my January Stitch Fix box.

Here’s what I told my Stylist:

Let’s go back to doing work-appropriate items. Dresses and skirts in heavier winter fabrics (fit and flare and swing skirts are best on my shape). I’m 5’7″ so nothing too short. I just pinned a bunch of new stuff!

{If you are interested in checking out all of my Fix reviews, you can click here. This Fix is #28… so I’m kind of a fan!}

Did she listen? Let’s see what I received. Luckily I was able to take pictures before the snow started coming down!

January 2016 Stitch Fix Review - Pocketful of Joules

Item #1: London Times Leeah Dress – $64
My initial thought when I pulled this dress out of the box was that it is a perfect dress for work. The navy color, demure neckline and knee-length skirt combine to make it something that I can easily dress up or down depending on my day. The price is pretty great too! I was a bit conflicted on the lace though… not that lace can’t be work appropriate, but it seems a little juvenile for the office.

Stitch Fix Review - London Times Leeah Dress - Pocketful of Joules

Sources: Similar dress and similar shoes.

The dress is so pretty though and fits really great, so I was considering it for our upcoming cruise. Until, I noticed that there was already a pretty bad loose thread pull on the very front of the dress. If it arrived already damaged, there is no way I’m going to be able to keep from making it worse with everyday life.

Keep or Return? I love the color and shape of the dress, but the lace overlay causes just enough issues that it’s going back.

Item #2: Adrianna Papell Evren Dress – $138
I just recently pinned this dress on my Pinterest page because I really like the way the circles grow in size as they near the hem. I do really like wrap dresses and think they are great for curvy girls, I just don’t tend to grab the ones in my closet too often because I feel the need to throw on shapewear when I wear one. I realized after I put this one on that I actually have a short-sleeved wrap dress in a very similar print.

Stitch Fix Review - Adrianna Papell Evren Dress - Pocketful of Joules

Sources: Plus sized version of dress (I can’t find the standard version), similar shoes, similar blazer.

Well gosh, this dress is quite va-va-voom in the pictures, isn’t it? I expected the skirt to be a little more flowy, but it really does cling to every curve. Which is great for a date night, but not so great for the office. I tried it with a black blazer to see if that helped, but the clingy material makes me a little too self-conscious for a typical workday. If you are looking for a sexy dress though, I highly recommend this one. Even though it looks like a wrap dress, it’s actually a fake so you don’t have to worry about it opening up and showing the world your goodies.

Keep or Return? The dress is great, but doesn’t really meet the needs of my everyday life. Also, since I have a dress so similar (that I don’t wear much), I might as well send this one back and try to wear the one I have more often!

Item #3: RD Style Mulligan Airy Knit Pullover Sweater – $68
Here’s another sweater that I just pinned on my Pinterest page and I was thrilled that my stylist sent it over. However, it was a lot less over-sized than I expected. It also has a hem with a higher front and lower back.

Stitch Fix Review - RD Style Mulligan Airy Knit Pullover Sweater - Pocketful of Joules

Sources: Similar sweater, exact jeans, similar boots.

Due to the open weave, the sweater is totally see-through, so I’m wearing a black tank top underneath. At first the ‘mullet’ look kind of turned me off, but it really is growing on me. However, there are some odd knit tie-offs throughout the sweater that make it look pretty terrible. Here is a close up of a couple of them:

Close up 2

Keep or Return? I do like the sweater, but the defects in the knit really bother me. Especially for the price! Looks like this one is going back too.

Item #4: Le Lis Alice Printed Faux Suede Swing Skirt – $64
In the past, I’ve had issues with the length of the skirts sent to me, so I happy that this skirt was almost knee-length. I also really like the floral print with the contrasting black waistband.

Stitch Fix Review - Le Lis Alice Printed Faux Suede Swing Skirt - Pocketful of Joules

Sources: {Outfit 1} exact blouse, similar skirt, similar shoes. {Outfit 2} similar cardigan, similar boots.

I like so much about this skirt, but the fabric is just really, really weird. It’s like a mixture of old-school velour and polyester…? The worst thing though is that it is so full of static that if I walk more than a couple steps it starts riding up and sticking there. Not cool skirt. Not. Cool.

Keep or Return? Remember how I told you all that I was going to be super harsh and only keep what I truly love? Well, than it shouldn’t surprise you that this skirt is going back too!

Item #5: Gilli Jodie Textured Skirt – $58
Stripes are still having a pretty huge moment and I really like texture of this skirt and the little box-pleat at the waist. It’s like the ‘big fancy sister’ of your typical swing skirt… which I like. It is also knee-length, which is a HUGE plus for me!

Stitch Fix Review - Gilli Jodie Textured Skirt - Pocketful of Joules

Source: {Outfit 1} exact blouse, similar skirt, similar shoes {Outfit 2} similar cardigan, similar boots.

Here is a close-up of the fabric texture:

close up 1

Keep or Return? I love this skirt and it’s a total keeper!

My Decision
I really think my stylist did a great job with this Fix and sent items that were more in line with what I was looking for. She really had no way of knowing that the navy lace dress was damaged and the sweater had weird stitch issues. If I truly loved either of them, I could have contacted customer service for a replacement… but I decided to take their defects for what they were, a warning that they probably wouldn’t stand up to my everyday not-walking-daintily-around life.

Usually I ask you what I should choose from my Fix, but I think the choice is pretty clear this month and I’ll be buying the striped skirt.

Do you think I made the right choice? Do you think I should stick with the same stylist or try someone new?
