Trunk Club Review: Hit Me Baby One More Time

When I asked for a Trunk last month for my Birthday (you can read my review here), I really wanted to love something. You know the whole ‘treat yoself’ thing. But, it was not meant to be… so I sent everything back. A couple days later I received an email from my stylist asking if she could try again.

I have referral codes burning a hole in my pocket and figured there’s no harm in trying on a bunch of pretty clothes, so I sent her some instructions:

Hi Dana – I just updated my pinterest page with some ideas. I’d love to see some slim black not-distressed jeans (that I can sneak wearing to work on more casual days) like the ones I pinned. Also, some casual and comfy tops.

Want to see if she delivered?

(1) DL1961 Emma Power Legging Skinny Jeans, $178 on sale for $129, (2) Foxiedox Retro Flowers Mini, $180, (3) BLANKNYC The Great Jones High Rise Skinny Jeans, $98, (4) Maggy London Smock Shoulder Midi Dress, $158, (5) Gibson Cross Front Stripes Top, $39, (6) Gibson Surplice Stripe Top, $45, (7) Halogen Lace and Crepe Top, $59, (8) Madewell Seabank Cardigan, $88, (9) Free People Catalina V-neck, $68, (10) 1.STATE Wrap Front Knit Top, $59, (11) Vince Camuto Layered Look Top, $59.

The pinterest page I sent her had lots of fall colored florals and black, so my stylist definitely used it for inspiration as I requested. She even sent me one of the exact dresses I’d pinned and an almost identical tank top to one I’d liked.

If you’re new to my Trunk Club reveals (you can find them all here), I don’t typically photograph every single one of the items. When the Trunk first arrives, I usually go through it and narrow down my choices to a pile of my favorites. Let’s check them out!

Outfit 1: DL1961 Emma Power Legging Skinny Jeans ($178) and Halogen Lace and Crepe Top ($59)

Right off the bat, this Trunk is working for me a million times more than the last one. This tank top is almost identical to one that I had pinned and fits great. The top has such a pretty lace detail, and it looks great with jeans and would look equally as nice tucked into a skirt or under a blazer.

I wasn’t really looking for a pair of blue jeans, but once I put these on I changed my mind. These are FANTASTIC! They are super stretchy, nice and thick, have NO distressing and… they make my butt look good too. With that in mind, at $178 they are much more expensive than I would typically spend for jeans. I was pleasantly surprised when I checked my Trunk Club account and they are currently on sale for $129! I love both of these pieces, and they look super cute with my red camouflage Rothy’s too!

Outfit 2: DL1961 Emma Power Legging Skinny Jeans ($178) and Free People Catalina V-Neck ($68)

These are the same jeans, but this time I tried them with a pair of booties to see how they tuck in… and all is well. The top from Free People is so soft and oversized and flowy. To be honest, I could really see myself wearing this all winter long at home with leggings or sweatpants. However, I don’t love this top as much as the first outfit, so this one may lose out simply due to budget.

Outfit 3: BLANKNYC The Great Jones High Rise Skinny Jeans ($98) and 1.STATE Wrap Front Knit Top ($59)

On my request I asked for a pair of slim, black, not-distressed jeans and these are EXACTLY what I wanted. They are super comfortable and stretchy with a high waist to keep my tummy all sucked in. They are also thick enough that I can wear them all winter long without freezing my buns off. This top is a nice casual version of my typical wrap top. It’s nice, but I don’t love it.

I also tried the black jeans with one of my own sweaters:

Yup, this was exactly what I was hoping for. I could probably wear this outfit to work on a cold fall/winter day where I have no meetings or presentations scheduled.

Outfit 4: Foxiedox Retro Flowers Mini ($180)

Initially I was going to reject this dress when the preview came through because it is described as a “mini dress” and at 5’7” most mini dresses are WAY too short on me. This one is okay though, but would look even cuter with some black tights. The stripes on the sleeves and hem are a great contrast to the embroidered flowers. The fit is also pretty great, just skimming over my middle rather than clinging in a weird way.

Outfit 5: Maggy London Smock Shoulder Midi Dress ($158)

This is the exact dress I pinned and it just screams FALL, right?! I love the v-neck, the cinched in waist and the tiered skirt. It’s hard to tell in the photo, but the tiered skirt is actually on a diagonal, which gives for some nice swishy action when you walk. I love, love, love this dress and would wear it to work with a fitted cardigan topper.

Here are my quickie 6-words-or-less thoughts on the items I didn’t show you:

(5) Gibson Cross Front Stripes Top: Neckline too high.
(6) Gibson Surplice Stripe Top: Boobs look weird with vertical stripes.
(8) Madewell Seabank Cardigan: Just okay.
(11) Vince Camuto Layered Look Top: Too thin, can see bra.

Trunk Finalists
Okay, so if you’ve been playing along that leaves me with the following favorites from this Trunk:

(1) DL1961 Emma Power Legging Skinny Jeans, $178 on sale for $129
(3) BLANKNYC The Great Jones High Rise Skinny Jeans, $98
(4) Maggy London Smock Shoulder Midi Dress, $158
(7) Halogen Lace and Crepe Top, $59

I do have credits in my account that will go towards this order, which is super awesome. I also did quite a closet clean out and have a couple hundred dollars in my Paypal account. So, I’m kind of leaning towards buying ALL of my finalists and then just not getting another Trunk for a while.

I asked for some feedback on Instagram over the weekend and it looks like most people like the blue skinny jeans and black tank top. It was split on the black skinny jeans and I was surprised that most people really don’t like that midi dress. In fact, 77% of people say NOT to buy the dress… so even though I love it, I’m totally second-guessing myself!

So now I’d love to know what you think! Leave me a comment below!

10/3/18 Update: Okay, the decisions have been made — I ended up buying all four of my finalists! It’s quite the treat (especially when I’ve been thrifting most of my clothes lately…), but it was do-able with my referral credits and my Poshmark sales balance. I think that all four of the items will be in heavy rotation very, very soon! I just have to get past these 85 degree days…

Trunk Club Review: My ‘tricky pieces’ Birthday Trunk

I always like to set myself up a Trunk Club delivery just in time for my birthday each year. It’s a nice way to usher in fall and also treat myself a little. For this year’s birthday Trunk, I decided to try something a little different. Instead of asking my stylist to send me a Trunk for an event or a season, I thought I’d give her a little challenge and also help get more wear out of clothing I already own.

I pulled three hard-to-style items out of my closet, uploaded photos to the Trunk Club app and asked her to build me some outfits. Let’s see what my stylist suggested!

Item #1: Camo skinny pants
I bought camo skinny pants in March 2017 and I think I’ve only worn them once. Which is such a shame because they are so cute! I don’t know why I find them so hard to style – for some reason when I stick a black t-shirt on with them it just looks awfully boring.

Here are Dana’s suggestions

(1) All in Favor Button Back Top, (2) All in Favor Patterned Drape Front Blouse (no link found), (3) n:PHILANTHROPY Zander Shoulder Cutout Tee.

I tried both the spotted blouse and the cutout tee, but this combo was my favorite:

I like the way the darker green goes with the more faded camo green and my old yellow sandals add a cute pop of color. While I do like the color combo, I’m not sold on this particular shirt though. It does have a cute button detail on the back, but it’s not really wowing me at all.

Item #2: Floral skirt with striped waistband
I bought a pretty pleated floral skirt about a year ago and have worn it only once, last November (see it here). I told my stylist that I’d love to wear this to work, which means I need a top that is at least elbow-length to cover my tattoos.  Here are her ideas:

(1) All in Favor Button Back Top, (2) Gibson Surplice Drape Front Blouse

Out of the two options, only the brighter green blouse had longer sleeves as requested.

I really love the way this blouse pairs with the skirt and the bright green color is fantastic! The neckline folding is really pretty too and drapes nicely. While the photos look great, in person the blouse pulls a bit in the shoulder area. It is almost pretty enough to make it worth buying, but I know that if something is even a bit uncomfortable I will never reach for it.

Item #3: Patterned blazer
When I was in Boston, I found an amazingly beautiful Didier Parakian blazer at a consignment shop. I’d like to wear it to work, but my only instinct is to stick it over a black blouse and black trousers. Here’s what Dana suggested:

(1) Felicty & Coco Rita Wrap Dress, (2) Kut from the Kloth Catherine Boyfriend Ripped Jeans.

I already have a couple black dresses in my wardrobe and this one was just kind of ‘meh’ on fit. Obviously, I’ll be pairing this blazer at some point with a black dress (and probably bright shoes), but I found the jeans option a little more out-of-the-box.

I totally didn’t realize this shirt was yanked all crooked until after I had changed out of the outfit, but just squint your eyes and imagine it straight. I really like the look of the blazer paired with the slightly-distressed jeans and my braided leather sneakers (thrifted, of course!). Typically, I love the fit of Kut from the Kloth jeans, but this pair had almost NO stretch to them, so they were very stiff and not comfortable. My workplace is a bit more formal, so jeans won’t fly there. It’s a pretty cute look though, so I may recreate it at some point for a dinner out in the fall/winter.

Bonus Ask: Booties
My last request for my Trunk Club stylist was for something I didn’t really NEED, but really WANTED. It’s my birthday Trunk… so I might as well spoil myself a little! Here was my exact request, “I’d like a pair of kick-ass boots/booties that I can wear with skinny jeans. Something really cool looking, possibly rugged or punk looking to kind of grunge up a boring outfit. Maybe something like a Veronica bootie from Frye (would love at a lower price point)? I’m open to ideas.”

Here’s what she sent:

(1) BC Footwear Acre Bootie, (2) UGG Simmens Waterproof Leather Bootie, (3) UGG Aureo Bootie.

Out of the three pairs of booties, my favorites style-wise were the BC booties with the cool buckles and side openings. Unfortunately they were some sort of ‘faux’ leather with a plastic heel and they just felt really cheap. I liked the UGG Simmens booties, but would have preferred them in black. The brown/dark green combo was a little odd. The other UGG booties were too slick for what I was hoping for — they were more ‘fancy’ and not enough kick-butt.

As it is, I actually found a super cute pair of leather and metal studded booties on Poshmark while waiting for my Trunk to arrive… for only $35 (this pair). They met my needs of something a little badass, so I’m excited to start wearing them.

As much as I was hoping to treat myself a little for my birthday with this Trunk, nothing really screamed winner to me. Even though I didn’t love anything enough to buy it, I did really enjoy the new ideas on how to pair some of my older items. I will definitely be on the lookout for a couple green blouses – one dark and one bright – like the ones that Dana sent over. I’ll also try pairing my blazer with some distressed jeans for a dinner out!

Trunk Club: A Fitness & Athleisure Trunk for those New Year’s Resolutions!

Did you make a New Year’s resolution to exercise more in 2018? Yeah, me too. I’ve mostly got a handle on this healthy eating thing, but my nutritionist also wants me to work out 4 – 5 times a week to help lower my cholesterol.

You know what makes it easier for me to exercise more often?
Cute clothes!

With that in mind, I decided to order a special fitness and athleisure Trunk from my Trunk Club Stylist, Dana (here’s my referral code if you want her to style you too!). During this time of year, I basically change into sweatpants, hoodies and slippers the second I walk in the door. Also, I’m wearing the whole athleisure look (code for comfy clothes… athletic leisure) on my work-from-home days. And weekends. So I thought it would be great if Dana sent me over some fitness items and also some layering pieces that I can wear all winter long.

Here is what she sent:

(1) Chapala Sneaker by ED Ellen DeGeneres, $97.95 (2) Whisper Cotton V-neck by Madewell, $19.50 (3) Easy Rider Origami Cardigan by Beyond Yoga, $132 (4) Cozychic Lite Pullover by Barefoot Dreams, $89 (5) Cozychic Lite Coastal Cardigan by Barefoot Dreams, $126 (6) Embroidered Sweatpants by Make Model, $49 (7) Reversible V-neck Tee by Halogen, $39 (8) Static High Waist Reversible Leggings by Zella, $89 on sale for $34.97 (sold out) (9) Vice Midi Leggings by Zella, $65 (10) Don’t Sweat it Sweater by Zella, $59 (11) Classics Franchise Jogger Pants by Reebok, $50 (12) 3-Pack Microfiber Tab Performance Socks by Sof Sole, $9.99.

If you’re new to my Trunk Club reveals (you can find them all here), I don’t typically photograph every single one of the items. When the Trunk first arrives, I usually go through it and narrow down my choices to a pile of my favorites. Let’s check them out!

Outfit 1: 2 + 3 + 9

This is like a fancy television character’s version of what I normally wear when I’m home! These leggings are labeled “high compression for gym & training” so they are better for running then lazing around the house. I love the color blocking pattern and the lay-flat seams that don’t itch or rub. The shirt fits fine and is a great basic, but the white is a bit transparent. I’d be open to trying this tee in different colors that don’t show my bra. The cardigan is so incredibly soft and I really wanted to love it so I could just cocoon myself inside it for the rest of the winter. However, it has dolman sleeves and I’m just not a fan of that look.

Since I was really loving the leggings, I checked online for reviews to see how they would hold up. There weren’t many out there, but I did see that these same leggings come in another color combo of black and blue (you can see them here). I immediately used the Trunk Club app to message Dana to see if they had that option in stock and they did. YAY! I’m already registered for a 5k and a 10k in the spring and I can’t wait to wear these for my runs!

Outfit 2: 10 + 8

I told my stylist that she gets bonus points for thumbholes and she totally delivered with this soft and comfy top. I just wish it were a little less fitted around the tummy area. And before you leave a comment that it doesn’t look that bad… know that I am totally sucking it in in this photo. Like so, SO HARD. The cool swoop up on the side is pretty adorable though and shows off the color changes in the leggings.

Unlike the last pair of compression leggings, these are labeled for ‘all day’ wear so they don’t squish me like a sausage casing. I love the cool pattern and the fact that you can also reverse them for a solid grey look. Due to the two layers of fabric, these leggings are a little warmer and perfect for me to wear at home on my work-from-home/weekend days.

Outfit 3: 7 + 5 + 6

The embroidered sweatpants are so soft inside and I like the fun flower detail. However, they are a little scratchy on the inside of the leg where the applique is applied. Since I’m already loving the two pairs of leggings, it makes it easy to pass on these sweatpants. I like the striped tee shirt because it is a nice thin layer and has a bit of stretch. It is also reversible, so you can decide whether to have a crew neck or v-neck on the front of the shirt. The only problem is that it’s a bit too fitted for me in the tummy area (same goes for the sucking the tummy in as hard as I could in the photo…). I will certainly keep this in mind though after a couple months of workouts!

This fluffy cardigan is part of the CozyChic collection from Barefoot Dreams and it is like wearing a super soft, warm cloud. I love the weight and snugglyness of the cardigan and especially love that it also has pockets. After I tried this one on, I did a little trip over to Nordstrom Rack to see if I could find one at a lower price point. While there were some similar options, they were nowhere as soft and snuggly as this one! I think this one might be a perfect splurge item for me…

Trunk Finalists
Okay, so if you’ve been playing along that leaves me with the following favorites from this Trunk:

(5) Cozychic Lite Coastal Cardigan by Barefoot Dreams, $126
(8) Static High Waist Reversible Leggings by Zella, $89 on sale for $34.97
(9) Vice Midi Leggings by Zella (but in the other color), $65

I do have a few credits in my account that will go towards this order, which is super awesome. I’m kind of leaning towards buying ALL of my finalists and then just not getting another Trunk for a while. What do you think I should buy?
