Reviewing Trunk Club: Working with a New Stylist

You’re totally not having déjà vu right now… I DID just do a Trunk Club ‘quickfire review’ post a few weeks ago (you can find it here). I actually didn’t even bother taking any photos for that post because I was in a bad mood and had a bunch of fit issues. Also, I was just kind of annoyed that my long-time stylist sent me items that went against a bunch of my previous notes.

I had been thinking about trying a new stylist for a while and decided to go for it. As it turns out, another Trunk Club stylist from the DC Clubhouse follows me on Instagram and I follow her back. I reached out to see if we saw eye-to-eye and she seemed like a good fit.

I explained to her that I already have a closet full of clothes, so I’m not in dire need of anything. However, I’m now looking for those special items that I can add into my existing wardrobe. I also explained that I’m not looking for ‘party’ clothes, but items that are work-appropriate for an office, but also have a bit of fun to them. We talked about my price range and that I’m much more likely to buy items if they are less than $200 (no $400 dress surprises!) Lastly, I’m almost 40. Fun for me isn’t going to the club…but hanging with my family on the weekends.

With all that in mind, Dana put together my first Trunk. I know that working with a new stylist is going to take a couple tries, but for her first Trunk she did a pretty great job. Want to see what she sent?

If you’re new to my Trunk Club reveals (you can find them all here), I don’t typically photograph every single one of the items. With 15 items and a couple different outfits, it would just get to be way too much if I showed them all. When the Trunk first arrives, I usually go through it and narrow down my choices to a pile of my favorites.

Here are my favorites from this Trunk:

Outfit #1: 1 + 3 + 4

Well, hot damn! This outfit is exactly what I wanted… without knowing I wanted it. Do I need a new pair of jeans…? Probably not. However, I love the way these jeans fit and WOWZA does my butt look fine! Okay, maybe I’m feeling myself a little too much here. Any which way, I love the dark wash, mini bootcut and high waist on these NYDJ jeans.

I topped the sassy jeans with a t-shirt from my closet and added on the super soft and flowy cardigan (item #4) that I didn’t know I needed, but now can’t live without. I like that it’s more of a 1/2 or 3/4 sleeve, so you can wear it over long sleeves and have them peek out. Oh and shoes… I need another pair of shoes like I need another hole in my head, but these Toms are that magical combo of funky, appropriate for work, AND comfortable.

Outfit #2: 12 + 14

Wow, this dress is totally fabulous and perfect for a professional office. I can throw on a cardigan or a blazer and be totally prepared for a meeting with my Executive Director or a presentation in front of 100 MBAs. The shoes also totally shout LIKE A BOSS and are surprisingly comfortable for having a 3 1/2“ heel.

I’m being super nitpicky here, but here are my issues. First, I have a bit of a tummy right now and this dress doesn’t disguise it as much as one with a more flowy/less fitted skirt would. Second, the top of the dress feels a little constricting on my chest/clavicle area. If it were a v-neck, I’d love it more. With that being said, I will keep this dress in mind for when I lose those 15 pounds that I’m working on. I’m also tempted by the shoes, but I bought this similar pair in the fall and haven’t worn them to work yet. So, if I can consistently wear the pair I own than I will reward myself with this snakeskin pair!

Outfit #3: 8 + 1

How cute is this fun striped dress?! I like that it has sleeves and it is also really flattering with its fit-and-flare style. My stylist suggested wearing it with the Tom’s sandals and they look great together. I also tried it with a blazer for the office. While I do really like the fit of this dress, I’m just not loving the stripes or the length – it seems a bit juvenile. I feel that the skirt is a bit too short on me (I’m 5’7”) and I wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing it to the office unless I had on black tights to disguise the shortness.

Outfit #4: 1 + 3 + 11

Okay, this is the same outfit as outfit #1, but I wanted to show you this super snazzy coat that Dana sent over. It totally meets my specifications of being something that has a little something special about it. The details on this thing are super cool and throwing it on with jeans and a t-shirt totally elevates the whole look. If you’re looking for a lightweight jacket with a personality, definitely check this one out! As much as I like it, I don’t love it… and I have a few other similar weight jackets that are already in heavy-rotation from my closet.

Other Stuff:
As I mentioned, I don’t photograph every single item… but I wanted to let you know some of my thoughts on the items you don’t see on me. First off, I’m so not a shrug girl. So, while I totally get why Dana sent over shrugs in three colors to try with everything, I just don’t like them at all and would prefer to top outfits with a cardigan or blazer. The cobalt colored dress (item #2) is totally gorgeous and it’s even on sale right now for less than $60! However, the asymmetrical hem of the skirt just comes up way too high on my thigh for me to be comfortable wearing this to work.

Last, the workpants (item #13). These are admittedly towards the upper range of what I am comfortable spending on work clothes. However, the fabric and details on these pants make them something special. Although reviews say that they fit true to size, I found that they were too tight on me when I tried my typical size of a 12. If I needed another pair of cropped black pants, I would ask Dana to send these over in the next size up… but I actually have a similar pair that I already love.

Final Thoughts on this Trunk
For her first crack at styling me, I think that Dana did a really great job! She really listened to me and it was clear that she has an understanding of what I am looking for in a Trunk. I’ve decided to buy all three pieces in Outfit #1 – the jeans, gray flowy cardigan and black Tom’s sandals. I really love those snakeskin pumps and it actually hurt a little to put them back in the Trunk, so I will certainly keep them in mind for the future. I guess it’s actually much better for my wallet that everything wasn’t perfect this time!

Reviewing Trunk Club: Quickfire Review & Help me Decide!

After a really poopy few weeks, I needed a pick-me-up. So, I emailed my Trunk Club stylist and told her that while I didn’t really have any needs at the moment that I wanted a Trunk to make me happy.

Poof. A few days later, my Trunk arrived.

Typically when I do my Trunk Club reveals I show you all 15 items I received and then photograph a few of my favorite outfits from the Trunk. {pssssst, if you want to see all my Trunk Club reveals you can see them here} This time I had a bunch of fit issues and was also in a super bad mood, so I didn’t feel like photographing everything. Instead, I’m going to give you my quickfire reviews and ask for your help on what I should buy to treat myself!

Ready?

Items 1, 2 and 3

High Rise Leggings by Rag & Bone ($198):  Guess I’m not a Rag & Bone girl, because my typical size was too tight and I was like a miserable sausage person with muffin top.

Deep V Half Sleeve Top by Splendid ($46): I have this top in black from my second Trunk and it gets a lot of wear in the summer. This one was white. I don’t like white.

Aly Lightweight Stripe Shirt by Rails ($148): My boobs were busting out of this. In a bad way

Items 4, 5 and 6

‘Faiyly’ Mixed Media Cardigan by Ted Baker London ($195): This is like a blazer and a sweater had a baby. It’s also white and I hate white.

Rosina Laser Cut Wedge Sandal by Halogen ($99.95): Ooooh, these burgundy laser cut wedges are super cute and the 3”heel seems comfortable. They also have really good reviews on the Nordstrom website. These might be a bit tricky to style though… it needs to be warm enough that I can go without socks and have my toes out, but cold enough that a burgundy velvet/suede makes sense. Strongly considering these.

Mid Rise Baggy Crop Jeans by Treasure&Bond ($89):  I thought these would be worse on. But as it is, they’re not great.

Items 7, 8 and 9

Annacis Perforated Oxford by Louise et Cie ($139.95): The picture shows the brown version, but I was sent these in black. Had I seen these in the store, I never would have even picked them up to try. But OHMYGOSH are they cute in person. I can see doing a fun peekaboo sock with skinny jeans/pants in the cooler weather, paired with black tights and skirts, or with a bare foot/ankles in the spring. My only concern is that the reviews on the Nordstrom website are mixed on how comfortable they are to wear.

Cranita Perforated Bootie by Vince Camuto ($149.94): Cute shoes but the heel is too high for me to wear.

Rainbow Rays Shirt by Free People ($108):  So ugly. So, so ugly.

Items 10, 11 and 12

Release Pleat Full Skirt by Eliza J ($168): I love Eliza J skirts and I own two (both from Trunk Club), but the sheen on this one makes it more appropriate for a wedding. I prefer a skirt I can wear to work and this isn’t it.

Scarf Print Crepe de Chin Fit & Flare Maxi Dress by Eliza J ($158): Beautiful dress, but the fit was all wrong for me. Also, made for a giant.

Illusion Yoke Lace Fit & Flare Dress by Eliza J ($198): This dress was not a friend to my boobs. Also, the cream slip and blue lace are way more ‘fancy wedding event’ than work.

Items 13, 14 and 15

Power Stone Adjustable Y-Necklace by gorjana ($58): I love that this necklace can adjust to be worn a couple ways – as a long lariat necklace, a medium length or adjusted into a shorter option (if you click through the link you can see the options). Loving this one and probably wouldn’t have picked it up for myself. This may be the perfect ‘cheer myself up’ gift.

‘Power Stone” Semiprecious Stone Bracelet by gorjana ($38): I wear a leather wrap bracelet almost every single day and this onyx and rose gold bracelet would look really great paired with it. I think I’m sold on this one!

Flash Clubmaster 51mm Sunglasses by Ray-Ban ($170): I picked up a pair of red Alexander McQueen sunglasses at Nordstrom Rack a year or so ago and pretty much wear them non-stop. While these sunglasses are super cute, I like mine better and they were way cheaper too.

Trunk Finalists
Okay, so if you’ve been playing along that leaves me with the following favorites from this Trunk:

1. Annacis Perforated Oxford by Louise et Cie, $139.95
2. Rosina Laser Cut Wedge Sandal by Halogen, $99.95
3. Power Stone Adjustable Y-Necklace by gorjana, $58
4. ‘Power Stone” Semiprecious Stone Bracelet by gorjana, $38

I have until the weekend to return my Trunk. What do you think I should buy?

2/10/17 Update: I decided to buy the Halogen Laser Cut Wedge sandals and the gorjana bracelet. Thank you all for your feedback!!

Reviewing Trunk Club: Cozy Holiday Fun

With the holiday season upon us, I was feeling the urge to give myself a little treat. So, I asked my fabulous stylist over at Trunk Club to send me over a holiday Trunk full of cozy sweaters and other goodies.

Want to see what I got in my holiday Trunk? As you can see, Alicia did an awesome job with filling my request of sending all the comfy sweaters. Even better, most of the sweaters that she sent over were between $59 – $69… including two amazing cashmere v-necks

Then, I take those favorites and try them with a couple different outfits from my closet to see if they will play well with the rest of my wardrobe.

Here are my favorites from this Trunk:

Outfit #1: 11 + 1

I knew when I saw the preview that I was going to be smitten with this “Love” sweater! It’s lightweight so that I can wear it all day without overheating and the graphic LOVE on the front is really cute, with still being age appropriate. I tried it with a pair of my favorite jeans and the Lucky Brand booties, as well as tucked into a full skirt. I can see throwing this on for the weekend, or even pairing it with a blazer for a more casual workday. This sweater was a total no-brainer for me and reasonably priced at $69. I love it so much that I already wore it this past weekend on our romantic Bed & Breakfast mini-break!

Outfit #2: 14 + 1

I love the color of this cashmere sweater! It feels like a great fall/winter shade that can be paired with a bunch of options. I kept it simple and did two casual outfits – the first with my favorite jeans and the Lucky Brand booties; and the second with navy corduroys and knee-high boots. If you are looking for an affordable cashmere sweater, go out right now and buy this one (or put it on your Christmas list). It comes in 15 colors and is currently 20% off, which makes it $69.20. For me, as much as I like the color and fit of this one, it’s a little too warm since I tend to run kind of hot.

Outfit #3: 9 + 1

This olive green hooded top is a great loose layer that gives you a little room for those holiday splurges. On the Nordstrom website they have it styled with a longer white shirt underneath and I really wanted to do the same, but didn’t have a similar top. Instead I paired it with a black tank top, jeans and the Lucky Brand booties for my first look, and navy corduroys and knee-high boots for the second look. I actually went back and forth on this top quite a bit before making up my mind. The sad and droopy pockets bothered me, so I decided that it wasn’t a perfect fit for me.

Those booties though… check out the close up:

They are super comfortable and I love the way they look with jeans, so we have another winner! They come in a bunch of different colors and they are currently 15% off on the Nordstrom website, making them $84.

Final Thoughts on this Trunk
I loved this month’s Holiday Trunk and am super excited about the graphic ‘Love’ sweater and Lucky Brand booties. Sure, I could have purchased a few more sweaters out of the Trunk, but I’m at the point where I’m trying to only buy items that I’m super excited about!
