Ginger(ish)

I’m pretty much never satisfied with my hair.

I get a trim and my bangs look weird.
I wear them in a barrette for awhile… and then I feel like I need them trimmed.
I’ll like the color and then BOOM I have 4 inch long roots.
I decide that I can’t handle the length anymore, so I chop off 7 inches and hate it.

Typically I solve these issues by just living with it and deciding that I actually don’t really care. You know, the whole ‘fake it until you make it thing’ but with ambivalence.

In June when I decided I couldn’t live with my roots for a minute longer, obviously something had to be done. However, my hair stylist/colorist was on leave for 6 months (or forever, the salon was weirdly vague) and the last thing I felt like doing was spending a crapload of money to break in a new colorist. So, I stopped by the store and grabbed a box of hair dye.

No biggie, I started dying my hair on my own when I was about 15 years old… so it’s not like I was a dye virgin. I’ve pretty much had every color of hair ever – red, blond, black, streaks of purple, green, blue, yellow, etc. I’d been getting it professionally dyed and highlighted for the last 5 years or so, but I figured it wouldn’t be a big deal to cheap out since the color I picked – natural copper red – was pretty similar to my previous hair color.

I popped the box open, sloshed it on my head, washed it out and… holy poop. It was NOT EVEN close to the color on the box. Instead, my hair was super dark brown and almost black at the ends. Um, where was my “natural” copper?!

So, I did what I always do and ignored it. I went down to the beach for a week and figured it would fade to something I didn’t hate.

But it didn’t.
And I kind of hated it.

I washed my hair with clarifying shampoo multiple times every day for a week, but the color hardly faded at all. I finally gave up and got my ends trimmed to get rid of the super dark black parts. I did my default move and ignored it for a while, but every time I looked in the mirror I cursed a little bit. Especially because as the dye started slowly washing out of my hair there was a light chunk right in the back of my head. So not cute.

I finally decided that when I got back from BlogHer I’d make an appointment with a colorist to get the reddish color I really wanted. In a stroke of luck, the day before I made the call to a new salon my former colorist Facebook messaged me that she’d moved to a new salon. HOT DOG!

I made an appointment for a couple days later and waited with bated breath. I even saved a couple hair inspiration pictures to my phone because I was DYING to go back to a ginger color.

It wasn’t easy. Apparently I screwed my hair up pretty badly when I used that $6 box of dye. My hair had to be stripped of color before we could get to the good part. So it took THREE hours to strip my hair, add in highlights and then an all-over color. By the end of the appointment, I basically didn’t want anyone to touch me for the rest of the day after being poked, prodded, washed in the sink over and over, and then prodded again.

It was worth it though, because check out my new color! Here is the day I got it dyed and here it is now (one week later). I literally ran all around my yard to try to get a good picture, so it’s a good thing I don’t have any close neighbors because they’d think I was kinda nuts.

Here’s the color in front of my brick wall, because OF COURSE I have to do a brick wall picture… that’s kind of my thing! {rolls eyes}

Then I galloped around my front yard a bit:

We can’t forget a ‘wind blown’ look, while shyly looking down as if something is funny and kind of embarrassing at the same time. See, I’m TOTALLY a model.

Ginger hair 3

The degree of redness changes depending on what light I’m in, but my colorist did exactly what I asked for when I said “make it look like my head naturally grows reddish hair out of it.” As the color fades – as reds tend to do – the lighter highlights will become more noticeable. Once I get roots, I’ll only need to get a one-color glaze in order to refresh the look.

However, after a week of living with the color I’m thinking maybe I should go a little MORE red next time… Or maybe I’m just kind of red-blind? What do you think?

Are you one of those ‘never satisfied with your hair’ people? What was your biggest hair cut or color mistake?

My Style: July Favorite Outfits

Can you believe we are already at the end of July?! It seems like summer is just flying by this year. So, in the blink of an eye, it’s time for my monthly favorites post! If you see something you like, I’ve made it easy for you to steal my style with links for each item, as well as some similar styles at different price points. If you want to check out last month’s post, you can find it here.

Look #1: Printed Tank & Coral Jeans

July Look 1

The Printed Tank
I received this top – the Daniel Rainn Greta Geo Print Tank – in my July 2014 Stitch Fix and immediately loved the mix of the black eyelet and the print. The only thing I didn’t like was that the teensy tiny buttons kept slipping out of the button holes, so I took 5 minutes and sewed them up so I wouldn’t accidentally flash anyone!

Unfortunately, I can’t find this exact top anywhere since it’s a year old and my old faithful of Nordstrom Rack is looking a little bare in their Daniel Rainn tops. However, this similar styled tank top from Anthropologie is a little pricy, but so beautiful.  I also really like this Racerback Cami from Old Navy, which is much more reasonably priced.

The Jeans
These coral jeans were another Stitch Fix find (from my April 2015 Fix) and I’ve only recently pulled them out of my closet to wear them. They are awfully fitted, so I paired them with the flowy top to keep the outfit more in my comfort zone. I think these Mavi jeans may be the ones I have and they are currently on sale at Nordstrom. These NYDY jeans from Nordstrom are almost identical looking and cost less.

The Shoes
Here are my workhorse Sam Edelman sandals again… I got them a few years ago and they are still as comfortable and look as great as when I first put them on. Here’s a version that is a little more simple, but still awfully darn sassy.  I also finally pulled the trigger and bought these in silver, and wore them all over NYC when I was there earlier this month.

Look #2: Pink Dress

July Look 2

The Dress
I first saw this dress pinned on the Stitch Fix board and immediately I knew I wanted it. So, when I saw it turn up on a random search of the TJ Maxx website (did you KNOW they have a website?!) I immediately ordered it and crossed my fingers that it fit as well in reality as it did in my head. I never thought I could pull off a bright pink dress, but oh my gosh does this one make me feel amazing. It is also super comfortable and I’ve thrown in in the wash and let it hang dry. That’s a dress winner if I ever heard of one! Want to know the best part? It’s on the TJ Maxx website for $29 in sizes 4 – 14! You can find it here.

The Bracelets
You can’t see my shoes in this picture, but you can kind of see my fantastic collection of leather wrap bracelets. I bought my first one when I visited Austin last year and couldn’t resist buying a second one as a Mother’s Day gift for myself! The larger one is the Single Jigsaw Stingray bracelet in turquoise and the thinner one is similar to this Single T-Bar bracelet in sparkle leather.

Look #3: A Showstopper Skirt

July look 3

The Skirt
I hemmed and hawed about this fabulous striped skirt from Anthropologie and even asked my followers on Instagram and Facebook whether it was a keeper or not. It wasn’t that I didn’t love the skirt… I just never imagined myself pulling off a full circle skirt with a layer of crinoline. However, I’m so glad I kept it because it really can be totally dressed up or down.

I got my skirt on super sale during the Anthropologie Tag Sale where it was marked down from $128 to $56. Of course, at that price it sold out in an instant, but I found some other showstopper skirts at the tag sale that I also love: the Sun Palm skirt is so gorgeous and it’s ALSO on super sale from $168 down to $89.95. The Bellflower skirt is so beautiful and I can see this styled with a similar colored top for a pretty bridal shower or engagement party look. Someone please do this and send me pictures! This one was $148 and on sale for $79.95. For a more reasonably priced alternative, try this floral version from Modcloth.

The Tank & Cardigan
This tank top is another score from my Anthro Tag sale haul and comes in a ton of other colors too. It’s called the Double v-Swing Tank and I like it because there are two layers of fabric, which make the tank top a little dressier than your typical cheapo version. I’m actually tempted to buy it up in a couple more colors, but I’m doing a no-shopping-for-30-days challenge… so I’ll have to pass.

I wear this cardigan all the time, because the pretty green color goes with almost everything in my closet. It’s the the Jackie cardigan sweater in tropical forest from J.Crew.

The Shoes
I picked these black gladiator wedges up a year or two ago on a random T.J. Maxx trip and they are super comfortable to wear all day long. Mine are by Franco Sarto and I found two more pairs that look quite similar: the Cera wedge sandal and the Unveil wedge.

I’m trying out something new and trying one of those fancy shopping widgets that shows you images for all the items I’ve linked to. It’s kind of a pain in the butt to do… so let me know if you find it helpful! (Update: I removed the widget because it was causing issues).

My July Fix: Lucky Number 22?

It’s Stitch Fix time again and as always, I can’t wait to share what I received in my box. After last month’s fantastic buy-it-all Fix and some Anthropologie tag sale shopping, I’m actually doing kind of okay on clothes for now. However, I LOVE receiving my monthly Fixes so I went ahead and kept my July Fix on the schedule.

{If you are interested in checking out all of my Fix reviews, you can click here. This Fix is #22… so I’m kind of a fan!}

Here was my stylist note for this Fix:

I love the tops you’ve been sending me, but there has been a lot of blue… let’s branch out with some different colors! Keep the fun summer clothes coming and I’d like to try another cardigan since the last one was too tight on my arms.

Instead of being able to get your feedback on what I should purchase, I had to make a decision over the weekend and send the unwanted items back. So, let’s see if you agree what what I kept!

Item #1: Pixley June Polka Dot Skirt – $58
After trying another Pixley polka dotted skirt that I didn’t like, I was a little nervous to try this fitted version. However, I pinned it to my board anyways because I could imagine it being a really good work skirt.

Stitch Fix Pixley June Polka Dot Skirt - Pocketful of Joules

For the first look, I styled the skirt with the 41Hawthorn Colorblock Blouse from last month’s Fix and left it untucked. For the second picture, I’m wearing a blouse by Sweet Rain (item #5 in this Fix) and tucked it in for a high-waisted look. From the front, the skirt looks darn cute and I especially like the second look with the mixed patterns.

Unfortunately, the side view is not so great with the fit drawing extra attention to my butt and belly. This is my “ehhhhh, not so good” face, in case you were wondering. {I can’t believe I’m about to post this picture…}

Pocketful of Joules - nope

Keep or Return? This one definitely went back. I love the idea of the skirt, but on my curvy figure it just made me feel self-conscious. Also, when I took the skirt out of the box I realized the zipper was already broken. If I’d have loved it, I would have emailed customer service to see if they had a new one… but since it went back I just made a note when checking out.

Item #2: Market & Spruce Clove Twist-Back Striped Cardigan – $64
I’m not a huge fan of open cardigans, but the moment I took this out of the box I loved this one. The fabric is super light and incredibly soft. The sleeves are extra long – I only wish there were pockets and thumb-holes!

For the first look, I styled it with a t-shirt and jeans (item #4 from this Fix) for a typical weekend/home outfit. To dress it up, I threw it on top of a simple black dress, layered some necklaces and added my happy yellow sandals.

Ready for the best part? Check out the back:

Pocketful of Joules - back

Keep or Return? This one is a keeper! I can certainly wear it as a layering cardigan for work, but I really see me throwing it over t-shirts on weekends.

Item #3: Collective Concepts Moray Crochet Panel Top – $68
My stylist recommended pairing this super sweet crochet panel top with the pair of distressed jeans she included in the Fix. I love the mix of sweet and ripped up, but this top really isn’t doing it for me at all.

Stitch Fix Collective Concepts Moray Crochet Panel Top - Pocketful of Joules

It looks okay in the picture, but the top is fitting me really oddly – it’s kind of tight on the shoulders and chest, instead of the draped look it seems to be going for.

Keep or Return? I have plenty of similar blouses that fit a lot better, so this one went back.

Item #4: Kut from the Kloth Haiden Distressed Straight Leg Jean – $88
I’ve recently seen a bunch of fashion bloggers wearing a slim fit boyfriend jean from Rag & Bone that costs almost $200 (even with the Nordstrom sale). I LOVE the look of the jeans – they are pretty much perfection – but I just can’t deal with the price. I pinned them on my board and asked for a more reasonable pair, so my stylist sent these over from my favorite jean’s brand, Kut from the Kloth.

Stitch Fix Kut from the Kloth Haiden Distressed Skinny Jean - Pocketful of Joules

Here are a couple repeat looks from above – a typical weekend outfit and something more appropriate for casual Friday. I like the fit of these jeans, but I’m not loving the super-sized cuff. Unfortunately, it’s sewn in… so unless I snip the threads I can’t really play around with it.

Keep or Return? I went back and forth on this one because I think the jeans would look so much better with a smaller cuff… but I decided to go ahead and return them. Similar Kut from the Kloth jeans show up at Nordstrom Rack all the time for around $40 and I’m sure I can pick up a pair in the fall.

Item #5: Sweet Rain Hampton Split Neck Blouse – $44
I love the pretty coral color of this blouse and the fun pattern, which is little triangles. The fabric is lightweight and doesn’t seem like it will wrinkle. The back is also a little longer than the front, which looks really cute when it’s untucked.

Stitch Fix Sweet Rain Hapton Split Neck Blouse - Pocketful of Joules

I paired the blouse with the polka dotted skirt and loved the mix of patterns. I also tried it with the jeans for a more casual look.

Keep or Return? I totally would have kept this top if I had not recently bought two orange/coral tops at the Anthro sale. Since I already own this one and this one, I don’t really need another one with such a similar color scheme.

What did I buy?
My stylist did an excellent job on this month’s Fix, but only one item won my heart… the Market & Spruce cardigan! It’s quite similar in feeling to the asymmetrical zip cardigan I bought in December by the same brand, and I wore that one a ton on my work-from-home days and weekends. I’m sure I will get just as much wear out of this striped version and will definitely be bringing it to our last trip to the beach next month.

What do you think… did I choose wisely? Should I have kept more than just the cardigan?
