Reviewing Trunk Club: My Birthday Trunk

Remember a last week when I shared my ‘birthday Fix’ with you? Long story short, I had hoped for a really fun Stitch Fix box so that I could spoil myself a little for my birthday. Instead, it was just okay and I was trying to decide what (if anything) to buy. Well, the day before I was supposed to make my decision, Alicia from Trunk Club sent me a Trunk to preview…. and it looked so good I sent the entire Fix back without buying anything!

Want to see what she sent?

(10) UGG Tomi Water Resistant Suede Sneaker, (11) Tory Burch Jolie Wedge Pump, (12) Steve Madden Wails Ankle Strap Pump.

Before she prepared my Trunk, I told Alicia that I could use some super soft casual wear for lazy fall weekends and my work-from-home days. I also said that I recently got a great pair of black work trousers and I could use some work blouses and super comfortable work pumps. She certainly delivered!

Here are some outfits based on her suggestions:

Outfit #1: 5 + 10 + jeans

Alicia had sent me a similar top in a previous Trunk that I’ve worn to death. I accidentally threw it in the dryer (a no-no with linen) and had asked her to keep her eye out for a replacement. This one  is great and I like the subtle stripes. I paired it with my boyfriend jeans and the UGG suede shoes. I love UGG and wore their sandals all summer long. These sneakers are like a dressier version of running shoes, but a bit more sturdy and warm than the Toms I usually wear. Oh and that super weird pose is my ‘hey, look at the cool shoes’ pose that all the cool kids are doing.

Here’s a closer look of the shirt pattern:

Outfit #2: 1 + 3 + 10 + a t-shirt

I really needed a new lightweight hoodie and my stylist sent this one over in two different colors to try. I love this blue and it even has a bit of a heathered look in person. The leggings have some sassy cutouts with netting, which makes them a little fancier. I really like the netting on the sides, but there is some on the back of the knee that looks a bit odd. Once again Alicia sent me over two colors to try and I liked the black the best. The UGG suede sneakers look really cute with this casual look and I could totally see me wearing this to run weekend errands, laze around the house, or even pick Jack up from school on a work-from-home day.

Outfit #3: 6 + 11 + black pants
Outfit #4: 7 + 11 + black pants

I liked the navy blue Eileen Fisher pants I purchased when I visited the Trunk Clubhouse, so I stalked a pair of black ones on eBay to add to my collection. I’m going to get a lot of wear out of these once the weather cools a bit, so I asked my stylist to send over some work-appropriate blouses to go with them. I love the pattern of the first blouse, but I’m not really a fan of the cowl neck. As for the Kate Spade swing blouse, the lace embroidery along the bottom is totally gorgeous, but the shape doesn’t really work for my figure. The Tory Burch wedges are amazing though and really very comfortable. If they were in my budget, I’d snap them up in a heartbeat… but at almost $300 they are out of my comfort zone. Even for my birthday!

Outfit #5: 13 + 12 + black pants

I just realized I forgot to add this top to my breakdown of items. It is the Halogen Tie Neck Sleeveless Blouse in Blue. My stylist suggested I pair it with my black pants and the suede pumps that she included in the Trunk. I tried the outfit as she styled it and also added a black blazer for a look I can wear directly to work. I really like the way that the blouse and shoes go together and like them with the blazer too. My only concern with the suede pumps is would I would totally ruin the suede on the back of the heel when I drive?

What Should I Buy?
My Trunk was just delivered yesterday – truly making it a Birthday Trunk – so I have a few days to make up my mind on what to buy. Here are the finalists:

trunk-club-finalists

I keep changing my mind on what to buy. Yesterday I was leaning towards the hoodie, linen t-shirt and UGG sneakers. This morning, I’m favoring the hoodie, suede pumps and gray floral blouse. And maybe the UGG sneakers…. What do you think I should buy?

Reviewing Trunk Club: Trunk #4

I know this post is super overdue, but I’ve been crazy busy for pretty much the entire month of August and I’m just now starting to catch up. I requested this Trunk from my Trunk Club stylist when I was in my ‘what to wear to BlogHer’ frenzy of hating my entire closet. In fact, if you follow me on Instagram I teased it over a month ago:

Before we get into what was in my forth Trunk, here are some easy-access links in case you need a quick refresher:

Also, I received an update from Trunk Club that I wanted to share: as of August 19th they have updated the home try-on policy so that you have 5 full days to decide which clothes you’d like before sending them back (rather than the previous 10 days). This change doesn’t really bother me a bit, since 10 days felt a bit like overkill.

What to see what I got?

Sources: (1) Trouve Leather Moto Jacket, $299 (2) Rag&Bone Hutson Mock Neck Tank, $115 (3) Pleione Sleeveless Asymmetrical Layered Top, $54 (sold out) (4) Vince Camuto Sleeveless Mixed Media Top, $59 (5) Rebecca Taylor Stained Lace Silk Top, $395 (6) Eliza J Pleat Polka Dot Faille Ball Skirt, $188 (7) Eliza J Metallic Jacquard Midi Skirt, $168 (8) Eliza J Jacquard Midi Skirt $168.

You’ll notice that I only received 8 items in this Trunk, rather than the normal 15 items. Since it was a requested Trunk for an upcoming event, my stylist sent over what she thought I might like specifically for my BlogHer needs. I put together each outfit based on her suggestions:

Outfit #1: 5 + 8

Trunk Club 4 - outfit 1 - Pocketful of Joules

It’s scary how well my stylist is getting to know me! While this wasn’t my favorite outfit in the bunch, it definitely was something that I would wear. I absolutely loved this top, even though it is crazy expensive at $395. {I know, I know… I would never spend that much on a shirt either.} If the sleeves hadn’t been see-though I would have had a much, much harder time sending it back. The skirt fit consistent with my other Eliza J skirts, but I wasn’t totally in love with the pattern.

Outfit #2: 4 + 6

Trunk Club 4 - outfit 2 - Pocketful of Joules

My stylist is trying so hard to get me into one of these gorgeous maxi skirts, but I’m really just not coordinated enough to pull it off. This outfit was such a showstopper, but just a bit too fancy for the BlogHer VOTY event that I would be attending. However, I’m totally imagining this for a fall or winter evening wedding. Right?!

Outfit #3: 4 + 6 + 1

Trunk Club 4 - outfit 2a - Pocketful of Joules

I so want to be one of those cool girls who can throw a leather moto jacket over an outfit and look like I just skulked off the runway… but I’m not. The proportions are off on this look for my body shape and as much as I love the moto look on other people, it just doesn’t work for me. However, if you are a little more straight up and down than I am, this look would probably look amazing on you! Also, this moto jacket is basically everything I would ever want in a leather topper — it is crazy butter soft and thin enough that it moves really well with you. If you are in the market for one, definitely check this version out.

Outfit #4: 2 + 7

Trunk Club 4 - outfit 3 - Pocketful of Joules

I would have never thought to pair this skirt with this gray top, but the colors look fantastic together. The only problem is that I despise mock turtlenecks with almost as much red-hot fury as I hate ice tea (which is a lot). If you don’t have an irrational hatred of mock turtlenecks, this one is pretty snazzy with an open back. It’s just not me, though.

Outfit #5: 7 + a shirt I own

Trunk Club 4 - outfit 3a - Pocketful of Joules

Now, THIS is my jam! When I first saw this skirt I had heart-eyes all over the place and it fits like a dream. The animal print pattern and metallic threads just scream PARTY, but somehow aren’t too overwhelming when I pair it with a black silk blouse and sandals. This outfit was the winner and made me feel like a total superstar when I received my VOTY award at BlogHer too!

What did I buy?
Only one item from this Trunk totally rocked my world, so I snapped it up and immediately packed it in my suitcase to take it to BlogHer. The metallic leopard skirt will also be going with me on my next cruise that is quickly approaching in a couple months. It’s not something I would have gravitated towards at the store, but now it’s something that I plan to wear for years and years!

With Fall approaching, are you going to try Trunk Club?
In a couple weeks I’m going to ask for a fall-transition Birthday Trunk, so I’ll keep you posted. Are you planning to try a Trunk for yourself? If you’ve been thinking about refreshing your wardrobe, this can be a great way to try some new looks out.  If you do decide to try them out, I’d really appreciate it if you use my special referral link it will cost you nothing and earns me a small amount to go towards items in my next Trunk. My Visit to a Trunk Club Clubhouse

When I was in DC for a conference last month, I found out that I was just a short walk from a Trunk Club Clubhouse. So, obviously, I felt like it was a sign for me to make an appointment to meet my stylist in person.

If you’re just hearing about Trunk Club now and would like to read about my first three Trunks:
Reviewing Trunk Club: Part One
Reviewing Trunk Club: Part Two
Reviewing Trunk Club: Trunk #3

Due to a bunch of referral credits that have been slowly adding up in my account, I had some fun money to play with. In fact, I had a little over $700 in credit, which feels like an insane amount of money for me to spend on myself for clothing.

I wanted to take you along with me on the ride, because it was amazingly cool to meet my stylist in person and give her real time feedback while trying everything on. And maybe you DO have a clothing budget where you feel comfortable dropping a bit more cash or a special event coming up where you want to find exactly the right thing to wear.

I gave myself a few rules before going in. First, while I’m not typically someone who would waltz into a fancy store with $700 burning a hole in my pocket, I decided to try and embrace the experience of not worrying about price. It helped to not think of it as ‘real’ money, since the credits can’t be cashed out. Second, if I were going to be dropping a bunch of (pretend) money, each item I buy must be versatile and made well so that it will stand the test of time.

Alicia, my stylist, ordered a Trunk to be delivered to the DC Clubhouse, but I was able to get a little peek by checking the app after she made her order. The Trunk included 15 items: 2 handbags, 2 pairs of shoes, 1 jumpsuit, 4 dresses, 3 blouses, 2 pairs of pants and 1 skirt. Every item was in the same color family and pretty much every piece mixed and matched together.

When I got to the Clubhouse, I was led over to my very own shopping area which had a huge mirror, couch, changing room and all my items displayed beautifully.

Trunk Club Clubhouse 2 - Pocketful of Joules

Every single item in my area was selected especially for me, in my sizes. They also brought me a drink of my choice to enjoy while I shopped. I basically felt like a princess. Or Pretty Woman. Or Princess Pretty Woman!

I’d put on each item and then come out into the ‘living room’ area of my space. Alicia would ask me my thoughts and really listen as I gave feedback on why I liked or disliked each item. Here’s a shot of me in one of the dresses I tried:

Trunk Club Clubhouse 3 - Pocketful of Joules

While I was shopping, she would occasionally run off to grab a few other things that she thought I might like based on my feedback. She also brought over a fun selection of sunglasses, watches and accessories for me to check out.

Of course, I had to get a picture of Alicia and me. We totally didn’t match on purpose!

Trunk Club Clubhouse 4 - Pocketful of Joules

As I worked my way through all the items, I found myself really falling in love with a few pieces that all happened to work together. I’ve really been needing a new work purse and the Kate Spade handbag was the perfect size without being overwhelmingly large. You can spot it on the first two pictures – it’s the pretty striped beige and white bag. You can also spy it here on my Instagram. It is the Kate Spade New York ‘Hawthorne Lane – Small Ryan’ Tote.

In addition to the handbag, I also bought two silk blouses and a pair of stretch crepe ankle pants that will be perfect for work.

Here I am in the Nordstrom Collection Print Stretch Silk Short Sleeve V-Neck Blouse and the Eileen Fisher Stretch Crepe Slim Ankle Pants.

My initial thought when I saw the pants were that they were stolen from my grandma because they were a stretchy crepe material and had an elastic waistband. However, you can go ahead and call me granny if you want, because these are SO COMFORTABLE! I wore them to work and they didn’t wrinkle or bunch even the teeniest little bit. Also, they got me out of my black pants rut… so a big thank you to Alicia!

You’re probably wondering about the second blouse. Well, I got buyer’s remorse and decided to return it. It was the Joie ‘Katrine’ Paisley Cotton & Silk Blouse and even though it is a really pretty blouse, it just didn’t play nice with anything in my closet. When I didn’t grab for it after three whole weeks of it hanging there, I knew it was time to let it go back home to the Clubhouse.

Not a big deal though – I emailed Alicia and she had customer service send me a UPS return label. I’ll print it out, pop it in the mail and the money will go back into my account for my next Trunk. Easy peasy, lemon squeezie.

I absolutely loved my Trunk Club Clubhouse experience. It was so cool to meet my stylist in person and get her feedback as I tried on each item. I also really liked that I could show her why some items don’t really work on my body shape, so that future Trunks can be even more awesome.

Have you ever been to a Trunk Club Clubhouse? Do you like the idea of having a shopping area set up just for you, or do you prefer to try on clothes in the comfort of your own home?
